Although the deed conveying ownership was finally recorded in September 2003, the tug-of-war over the fate of the historic light tower has continued.
The Office of the Inspector General of Homeland Security has been tasked with conducting a financial review of how the Conservationists used money collected for climbing the lighthouse during the years that it leased the structure from the Coast Guard to restore the light tower

The financial review, the latest in a string of reviews which have identified no wrong doing, was requested by U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-3rd District, who, although a sponsor of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) of 2000 which was to take politics out of the preservation and ownership of lighthouses, vowed that Currituck Beach Lighthouse would be conveyed to Currituck County
