Kerry, Edwards Swap One- Liners with Hecklers
SEDALIA, Mo. (Reuters)

From the platform of the same train car from which U.S. President Harry Truman gave Republicans "hell" in 1948, John Kerry and John Edwards caught fresh jeers. ..

As Bush backers again chanted, "Four more years," Kerry drew cheers by predicting the end of the Bush presidency on election day. "Let them chant because they have only three more months to chant," Kerry said.

"Harry Truman came through here in 1948," Kerry said. "And when Harry was talking, people would say, 'Give 'em hell Harry,' and Harry would say, 'I just tell them the truth and they think it's hell."'

Edwards maintained a smile but at one point asked: "I just want to say to those folks who don't want to hear from us: My children are on this train. Show them some good Missouri manners."

As the train pulled away, Edwards gushed: "That was great. That was fun. When they were booing 'hope' and 'optimism,' I knew it was an interesting crowd."

47. a world of difference
during Big Dog's admin, he didn't shy away from the thugs. Kerry and Edwards surely don't need a pre selected aduience who has been "volunteered" to stand still and cheer on cue :evilgrin: and especially unlike Darth Rummy nd unca Dick, Kerry doesn't have to "invite" active duty GIs (the few who haven't been shipped out yet) to "perform their roles" as background props either!

9. Isn't this the same state,,,,
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 06:16 AM by ChrisK
that John Ashcroft lost in an election to a dead guy?...I'm not sure how to see this...either he (Ashcroft) was SO bad that a dead fella was WAY better off deciding on issues and laws or some of the folks there aren't too bright.

It's refreshing to see that there weren't any of those "Free speech zones" or "loyalty oaths" in action here unlike in someone else's campaign.

What I'd love to see is Kerry or Edwards engage one of this Bush supporters just for a few minutes in a sort of one-to-one when they start their howling and see how far that heckler can get when faced with some facts on what Bush is doing and how he has destroyed this country and its good name, not to mention the raping of its citizens via policies that pander to the rich and undercut the poor and needy...but then I think one would need to ask that person (heckler) to step into the light...which I think, for Bush supporters, is a bit scary..it would mean they would have to face the fact that maybe Bush is sort of for there "Religious America" but at the same time he is slowly destroying it...Wasn’t it George himself that said he "never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people."?

It's nice too see him so honest..even if it scares the hell out of me.

26. History Lesson
The "dead guy" was Mel Carnahan, an extremely popular governor. I resent being called not bright because I voted for anybody but Ashcroft. Carnahan was killed on a small plane (sound familiar) very shortly before the election, which had been too close to call prior to that. The sympathy vote was enough to decide it but had he lived Carnahan hopefully would have won anyway. His wife was appointed to fill in but then she lost in a run off in 2002 to a wing-nut.

11. Protesters at Bush Rallies Get Arrested By Police
Why is it police don't arrest protesters at Kerry/Edwards' rallies.

My point is who is telling police what to do - are Bush's people saying arrest them, shut them down? That is a story that needs to be investigated.

13. Notice Edwards reaction to having an "interesting crowd"
and compare it to Bush and Cheney's absolute fear of dissent. Edwards and Kerry's behavior reminds me of Clinton and how he would listen to protesters and confront them with the facts. These are two candidates we can be proud of.

42. From what our local paper said...
There were about 3,000 total (not bad for such a small town), & they said "dozens" of protesters. What they lacked in numbers they made up for in volume...I hope to God those folks were drunk or something, because if not, they'd make us all look like a bunch of backward hill-folk. I was there, & these folks were a bunch of pigs. I haven't heard much reporting on the profanity (directed specifically toward Teresa), but what do you expect? This is the party of Dick "Go-F-Yourself" Cheney. Maybe that's the republican's way of elevating the discourse? How embarrassing...

I love that! Makes those hecklers look like complete boors, which I am sure they are. Family values indeed.

Meanwhile, the Bushies are pissing off their OWN supporters by making them sign pledges of allegiance to get into Bush rallies, while dissenters are arrested by the SS, further demonstrating the distinctly undemocratic values eschewed by Team Bush.

Boy, talk about shooting yourself in the foot, try both feet.

25. Kerry and Edwards understand
The lone heckler or two are not to be feared. Let's face it, when you're up in front of an audience, you have all the power. You have a microphone blasting your every word to everyone in the area, and the heckler has a set of lungs. You can stand there calmly and speak in a normal tone of voice, and everyone hears every word. The heckler has to shout, which turns some people off, and his shouting is bound to be misunderstood by some and unheard by others.

As the speaker, you're not going to reach everyone in the audience, and you don't have to try to. Let's face it, you're clearly not going to reach the shouting heckler. But with a calm response ("Be nice, my children are on this train"), it doesn't matter what the heckler said, who heard it, or what they might have heard. The rest of the audience clearly heard Edwards being responsive, calm, polite, and assured.

Scoreboard:

Heckler: 1
Edwards: The rest of the crowd

27. I think you mean, "undemocratic values *espoused* by Team Bush".
To "eschew" something means to reject it, which is exactly the opposite of what the bushies are doing with their undemocratic values.

43. For everything!!
Kerry is taking pages out of his playbook here and there. In JC he took off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves. It was definitely hot and could have just been coincidence, but it did remind me of Dean. He did it in a "we're going to get down to business" way. I think he might have even said "You have the power." He mentioned that we're the "show me state" and threw it in.
I knew that Dean would be good for us whether he won or lost.

39. Kerry visits Sedalia
By Sarah Daniel
The Sedalia Democrat

<snip>
John Kerry and John Edwards were enthusiastically greeted Thursday night from a crowd of about 3,000
<snip>

Some of the crowd cheered while others booed, all wanted the candidates to know their opinions.
<snip>

Bennie Hatfield, 69, of Sedalia, was 9-years-old when President Harry Truman made the same kind of whistle-stop here in 1948. He is a Kerry supporter.

"I was in the same spot, just on the other side of the depot," Mr. Hatfield said. "I was real excited I got to see the President. Who gets to see the President?"

When Mr. Edwards spoke about the pair's plans for better health care and keeping American jobs at home instead of outsourcing them overseas. Bush supporters booed.

"How can you boo not outsourcing jobs?," he said. "We would never shout at our opponents when they are speaking because we believe in a positive, optimistic view of America."
