Prayers at board meetings to end (FL--Manatee County School Board)
http://www.newscoast.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20030819/NEWS/308190377/1060

MANATEE COUNTY -- Fearing it would put the district at risk of an expensive and prolonged lawsuit, the School Board agreed Monday to end its decades-long practice of beginning meetings with the Lord's Prayer.

Board members said they wouldn't gamble with taxpayer money to defend against allegations that the practice is exclusive and unconstitutional.

On the advice of its attorney, Mark Barnebey, and Superintendent Roger Dearing, the board will instead open meetings with a nondenominational invocation given by members of the clergy invited on a rotating basis.
