Moore Hot Water (Fox News.com - Brit Hume)
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,128040,00.html

"The latest from the Political Grapevine:

Moore Hot Water
The Bloomington, Illinois, Pantagraph has sent a letter to filmmaker Michael Moore, condemning him for, "misleading" and "unauthorized" use of the newspaper in his latest film, "Fahrenheit 9/11." While addressing the 2000 election controversy, the film flashes a Pantagraph headline saying; "Latest Florida recount shows Gore won election," dated December 19, 2001.

But, in fact, not only did the headline appear in the Pantagraph two weeks earlier and in much smaller type, it appeared above a letter to the editor, reflecting the writer's sentiments, not the news. The Pantagraph is now demanding an apology, an explanation, and compensatory damages, totaling $1."

Did I read that right? $1?????

LMAO!!!

Brit, you suck!

2. Somebody should analyze that old Bush ad.
The one where they display a bunch of newspapers & headlines and quote from them selected attacks on John Kerry.

3. I actually agree with a $1.
It makes their point and dosen't make them look completely vindictive and idiotic.

4. "insults the Saudi royal family by tying them to the Bush administration"
Edited on Thu Aug-05-04 06:56 AM by 54anickel
Love that line.

snip>
Speaking of "Fahrenheit 9/11," Cuban leader Fidel Castro (search) has ordered state-run TV to broadcast the film across the country, during primetime. A University of Havana professor who saw the film calls it, "A work of love for humanity."

The film's distributor insists the Cuban broadcast was "not authorized." In Kuwait, meanwhile, the government has banned "Fahrenheit 9/11" altogether, insisting it violates a law that prohibits insulting friendly nations.

A Kuwaiti official says the movie insults the Saudi royal family by tying them to the Bush administration, and, "makes Iraq look like a paradise whose problems started with the American invasion." The official says the film, "would have angered Kuwaitis."

28. So Texas and Kuwait have another thing in common? I have no idea
about the theater owners relenting in Waco.

Such reckless substituting larger type in a representation of a newspaper headline CANNOT be allowed!

7. This Looks Tailor-Made for Michael Moore
to make an important statement out of paying $1 to this newspaper. Apparently the publishers of the Pantagraph have never seen 'Roger & Me' or 'The Big One.' They may be surprised to find Michael Moore and his film crew in their lobby one day very soon

8. Bad slug, bad headline
...A headline that doesn't clearly and unmistakably convey the content and purpose of the paragraphs below?

Guess what, Pantagraph, that's your fault as a newspaper, not MM's.

Proper headline would've been something like "Gore won, says reader" or "Reader: recount favors Gore" if it was a LTTE and not a news item -- unless the "letters" header is really obvious nearby, which apparently it ain't.

14. Once people see a picture of the "transgression"...
these threads usually die. Note how all the RW stories on this are Text Only and leave the impression that Moore took a LTTE and created a Front Page Headline out of it.

12. This isn't really LBN
It's been kicking around the echo chamber for a few days now. Brit Hume is just the latest bozo to be bringing it up. It does show, however, how weak their shit really is.

20. Perhaps the lawyers here can elaborate
I thought a $1 settlement was equivalent to saying "the plaintiff is legally correct (technically), but there was no actual harm done to the plaintiff by the defendant's action, so damages will not exceed the token sum of $1". Something like that. I don't know who would pay court costs, though.

The paper isn't looking for money just acknowledgement of the error and a retraction.
