Riggs Will Review Dealings With Pinochet, Wash. Post Reports
Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 07:43 AM by seemslikeadream
Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Riggs National Corp.'s board of directors will investigate the bank's relationship with former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and whether its executives helped him hide money, the Washington Post reported, citing unidentified people familiar with the board members' plan.

The board was surprised by the extent of allegations in a July 15 Senate Report about Riggs's relationship with Pinochet, the newspaper said, citing the unidentified people.

Riggs also put Executive Vice President R. Ashley Lee on paid leave until a Justice Department investigation ends into whether while serving as a U.S. bank examiner, he kept results of a government inquiry into Riggs from its file, the paper said, citing unidentified people familiar with the case.

Riggs spokesman Mark Hendrix didn't immediately return a voicemail left by Bloomberg News before business hours.
