6. I don't think you need to be the Amazing Kreskin...
Around the office here from day 1 there has been a pool of "When will Mark Hacking get arrested?" The mattress, the time line, his story held about as much water as a mesh bag. I imagine the SLC police didn't arrest him simply because he was under psychiatric observation and they wanted this to be airtight.

My own feeling is that he's pretty well confessed at this point, and they'll be getting a comfy cell ready for him at the prison off of Interstate 15...

30. Here's another question (maybe should be asked of OJ),
but what is the best way to murder your spouse and get away with it?

Not that I'm in the market. It just seems even the best dressed spouse killers do some of the stupidest things.

We have all these shows on Discovery, etc. that show you how not to kill your spouse. Don't these folks watch this stuff.

34. The circumstantial evidence just looks bad...
Things really don't look promising for his defense, especially in light of the fact that the two families came out and said "OK everyone, stop looking." without the police even knowing about it.

Him not getting into Med school, lying about even graduating Univ of Utah, buying the mattress when he said he was looking for her. I think a first year prosecutor could land his ass in the chair.

45. I think so too, but we'll have to wait and see
However, I doubt this was a premeditated murder. I'm guessing that it was a "rage killing" and that he has an excellent chance of getting off due to "temporary insanity". And, for the record, that would be a perfectly fair verdict in that case.

Of course, there has to be a trial first and well, we do have to learn whether the woman is dead or not too.

60. I don't think for a minute that he'll get off...
...at least, not completely. And, for the record, it would not be a fair verdict if he did, even if it was "just" a "rage killing".

Sheesh. Someone who cannot control their anger to the point where they murder someone, is a danger to society. Maybe not as cold blooded as other murderers, but still a danger. And it's bizarre (to me) that anyone could think it okay for them to evade any consequences of their actions. The thing is, "temporary insanity" is usually not that temporary. Usually it's a pattern of behavior.

And anyway -- she's just as dead, whether his actions were premeditated or "just" spur of the moment.

Yes, I'm assuming his guilt. Yes, he deserves a fair trial, just like you or me. And if he gets off because he does not appear to have done the deed, that's one thing. Otherwise, lock him up and throw away the key. No, not the death penalty. I'm against it -- but in cases like this, only because it would be too easy for him.

I am sick of them doing so much digging and checking on all the leads on a murder case which is sad. The case does not affect the entire world.l

11. I said this before and I say it again...
I don't like to read these types of stories, and here is my reason...

It seems that there is a pattern to these in that they pick a good looking middle class white woman that will draw the public sympathy. Why is it that you never hear about a black female or a hispanic female who might have been in a similar situation in a poor urban areas talked about in the same context? There is something defenitely peculiar going on in the media and I think this should be more openly discussed.

I am not implying this isn't a great tragedy, I just don't think I should get this much press coverage, and we have much more pressing issues....

pathos never fails to work.

But it is odd that all these missing young women stories, with or without belly, usually involve white or white-looking women. You would think no one else every dies horribly.

I don't watch the news much anymore because I can't stand the littany of the latest crime report, as much as I feel for victims and families.

37. Even Amnesty International is involved (Juarez)
http://web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGAMR410112004?open&of=ENG-MEX

It is now almost 11 years since the brutal cycle of abductions and murders of young women began in Ciudad Juárez in northern Mexico. Over the last year there has been intense national and international pressure to stop violent crimes against women and to end the impunity with which many such crimes have been committed. In 2003, the Federal Government finally began to implement a programme of measures to prevent and prosecute acts of violence against women in Ciudad Juárez.

<snip>
In this report Amnesty International considers developments over the last year in the struggle to end violence against women in Ciudad Juárez and the city of Chihuahua and makes a number of recommendations to the authorities on issues that remain unresolved and need urgent attention.

... was in full force here, led by Elizabeth Smart's family. (They are actually starting a *business* that helps organize searches in these kinds of cases -- their right, but yuck.)

The bottled water given to searchers even had "Find Lori" stickers on them, part of the whole "package".

E.

I feel bad for the families involved. But, I'm very happy I can walk in that canyon again and not feel fear.

54. For the same reason that we don't hear much about
missing black children. To a martian it would appear that only blonde haired, blue eyed Aryan children go missing in the US because those are the ones on the news. They are the kids the media and the police round up the search parties for. The Hacking case, like most missing persons cases, is an inside the family job.

18. Given that most single occurance (vs. serial) murders
are committed by family members and S.O's and that suspicion almost always immediately focuses on someone who falls into those categories, you'd have to be a complete moron or relatively arrogant to think that you'd get away with killing a loved one in most cases.

Of course, one should never discount the human inclination to self-delusion in these matters either.

28. I think the "pregnant" is also what kept this fueled...
I think the fact that she was pregnant when she disappeared is really what kept the story fueled. It is almost certain to hit a very quick crescendo and then fall off the radar screen. I don't think that there is much doubt as to culpability in this case, and Mark Hacking should read up on Utah law and see the last time they cleaned the rifles for the firing squad. I believe (though I'm not positive) they still have firing squad on their death penalty options (in addition to electric chair and lethal injection) that was last tested in the late 80's, I think.

Sadly, this woman is gone as is her unborn child, and there is nothing anyone can do to bring her back. I just think the parallels between this and the Petersen case are what has brought it up so much recently.

This is a local story? Then I guess everything is a "local" story. The wild fires in CA are "local" to CA, the only national thing would be what? The stock market and national political news.

Seriously, things capture people's attention, and that's what makes things national. Its sensational, and that generates ratings from the sheeple watching TV, and voila! You have ratings! You have national news!

1 person probably dead - how many people were murdered today in the U.S. - why aren't all their stories national? How many people went missing today - why aren't all their stories national? How many died in a house fire today - why aren't all their stories national? Get my drift?

A wildfire burns thousands of acres, put many out of their homes and besides has some great visuals, same with tornados and hurricanes. They involve governors and the president declaring them disaster areas. That's why those stories are national.

Hackings and Peterson stories should've stayed local or their biggest fame should've been in some Ann Rule book or A&E movie.

43. Why are these stories making headlines?
Peterson & Hacking stories have a similar M.O.

The "unborn child" to some, "fetus" to others.

If either is convicted of double homicide, it declares "murder" of a fetus.

Roe vs Wade and stem cell research. Now who wants to suppress those two issues?

They could be covering the child torture in Abu Graihb or about how so many of our soldiers are dying in Iraq and they cover this and Kobe Bryant instead.

63. So, torture is worse than murder? OK. I'll jot that down.
Sorry, but, let's see... hmm. A pregnant woman is MURDERED (No life remaining) as opposed to torture (people still alive) of let's say 50 prisoners (known) by 15 (guestimate) guards, and the toture that happened months ago should be front and center.
Yet the MURDER (again, murder = death) of 'This other dead chick' is really meaningless.

Alright, color me jaded, but, WTF are you talking about? Does human life mean so little to you that "this other dead chick" is just a pain in the ass since you can't see any more Abu Graihb scandal?

I guess when those nuts in Texas dragged James Byrd (aka "that dead dragged black guy") to his death, we should ignore that too? Or is that ok because it is for a "cause"? Sorry, a murder is a murder, let's not call a dead woman "this other dead chick". Quite frankly, your statement is pretty telling.

57. and guess who is on larry king tonight?
must be a slow news day (/sarcasm)

they must have decided to take a break in their efforts to terrorize all americans with 42 month old "chatter".

i am confused. i don't know whether to be afraid, or scandalized.

i guess i'll just have to be both. i want to do my part to be a true-blue american.

if i'm not, then the "terraists" have won.
