Bin Laden will be caught : CIA
US intelligence officials think bin Laden is hiding somewhere along the rugged Afghan-Pakistani border. Military and intelligence agencies from numerous countries, but most significantly Pakistan as of late, have assisted in the search for him over the nearly three years since the September 11 attacks.

Acting CIA Director John McLaughlin has pledged recently that bin Laden will still be caught. "We have pins on a map. We have reports," said a second senior CIA official, speaking of bin Laden's whereabouts. The officials briefed reporters at CIA headquarters about a highly critical report released on Thursday by the presidential commission investigating September 11. Still, bin Laden remains elusive.

The commission's report detailed a series of strategic and tactical mistakes made by the intelligence community, including missed opportunities to go after terrorist operatives and thwart the attack.
Even today, intelligence veterans have said the agency has no useful idea where bin Laden is. Federal officials have warned of a heightened risk of attack leading up to this country's November elections. The first CIA official said credible evidence suggests that bin Laden and other senior leaders called "al-Qaeda central" are thought to be currently planning attacks.

Other groups sharing the same militant ideology are plotting as well

War on Terror Seen Limping in Afghanistan, Pakistan

ISLAMABAD/KABUL (Reuters) - Despite a massive manhunt and billions of dollars spent on manpower and equipment, the U.S. war on al Qaeda in Afghanistan (news - web sites) and Pakistan is still a long way from achieving its objectives, security experts warned.

The 9/11 commission's report, released on Thursday, described Afghanistan as the incubator for al Qaeda and for the September 11, 2001 attacks, noting that the country must not become a sanctuary again for international crime and terrorism.

Security and political analysts said Washington had been unable to root out the terror threat from the region and bring real stability to Afghanistan, where Taliban fighters and their Islamic militant allies carry out deadly attacks almost daily.

"The war on terrorism is being lost by the Western alliance. Al Qaeda and their local allies today are much stronger in Pakistan," author and Afghan expert Ahmed Rashid told Reuters.

Wonder if one of the pins on their map is an Afghan prison...

This is such an obvious setup. We have to get national media on the story of the October surprise.

9. Idiot
Why would you announce this, besides you have an agenda.

Believe me I want them to catch him, but telling the whole world where you think he is, doesn't give me much hope that you can, if you can't keep you fucking mouth shut. Shit you think he's going to stay here's he is at....

12. What Bush* said about capturing Bin Laden
Deep in my heart I know the man is on the run, if he's alive at all. Who knows if he's hiding in some cave or not; we haven't heard from him in a long time. And the idea of focusing on one person is -- really indicates to me people don't understand the scope of the mission. Terror is bigger than one person. And he's just -- he's a person who's now been marginalized. His network, his host government has been destroyed. He's the ultimate parasite who found weakness, exploited it, and met his match. He is -- as I mentioned in my speech, I do mention the fact that this is a fellow who is willing to commit youngsters to their death and he, himself, tries to hide -- if, in fact, he's hiding at all. So I don't know where he is. You know, I just don't spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. I'm more worried about making sure that our soldiers are well-supplied; that the strategy is clear; that the coalition is strong; that when we find enemy bunched up like we did in Shahikot Mountains, that the military has all the support it needs to go in and do the job, which they did.

Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 10:57 AM by Alpharetta
Remember all the FBI agents in North Carolina looking for Eric Rudolph, the Atlanta Olympic and Birmingham bomber?

Now you know Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North Carolina residents are all armed with some nice guns. How many agents a week would have been killed in North Carolina if those agents were actually from, say, an invading arab country?

(edited to change the name to Eric Rudolph. I keep forgetting Eric Roberts is Julia Roberts' brother, not a bomber.)

15. Just in time for the elections!!!
Make sure we scream it loud! We ALL know that Bin Laden is on ice somewhere, as Saddam was, and just awaiting the right moment to be "captured". Utter bullshit from the CIA. I thought Bush "didn't care" where Bin Laden was???

18. Was Saddam really caught at the right time?
It really didn't do a whole much for Bush's approval rating...

I figure if OBL was on Dyalysis for kidney problems four years ago... Having to hid in the rugged mountains of Pakistan would very likely have killed him.

What say, two weeks before the election? Or do you think they'll give it a month to make sure they get some commercials out of it?

I'm sure they're just waiting for the signal from Rove to go ahead and nail him.

26. The real missing Intel
is some PROOF that Bin Laden is really alive or, at the very least, whether his videos and tapes are genuine and contemporary.

This type of offering is so lame that it is no wonder the CIA rep is so bad. First how about saying why they are so sure he is alive and then I might be impressed by the extreme unlikelihood that he will be physically "caught" on the word of the latest Bush appointee.

Pathetic. Probably a balloon to see if the public assumption can be gulled by some attack and obliteration of target with the good news that- yes- for sure they got Bin Laden, but golly gee whiz, we only have a few scraps of his turban and Bin Laden DNA.
