Basra Council Member Killed by Gunmen

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An Iraqi council member running for governor in the southern port city of Basra was killed as he left for work Tuesday morning, along with his driver and bodyguard, an Iraqi official said.



Also Tuesday, Filipino truck driver Angelo dela Cruz, held hostage for nearly two weeks, has been freed, a spokesman for the Iraqi National Congress said.


"The (United Arab) Emirates embassy has freed the Filipino hostage," said spokesman Haider al Bandar. He provided no further details.


Hazim al-Aynachi was pulling out of his driveway when gunmen opened fire on his car. Another person was injured, said council head Abdul Bari Faiyek.
