South Africa Losing War Against Aids - UN

SA's lacklustre response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic has drawn a blistering attack from United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan's special envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa, Stephen Lewis, who accused government of dragging its feet on treatment.

Lewis told the 15th World AIDS conference in Thailand yesterday that it was ironic that SA, with all its resources, was not leading the way for its African neighbours.

About 5,3-million South Africans are infected with HIV; but only 6000 out of about 400000 in need of antiretroviral medicines are receiving them.

"You can't imagine how the impoverished countries in Africa are moving heaven and earth to implement treatment," the UN special envoy said.

2. There's a program on PBS called "Wide Angle"....They did an AIDS story
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 08:33 AM by SoCalDem
this week about Africa (Angola)..and it's so depressing.. Some of the neighboring countries have rates of up tp FORTY PERCENT positive for AIDS.. They are actively testing their military and hope to start testing truckers..

It's about money and "depopulation"..

Angola "will soon be producing twice as much oil as Kuwait".. If there are fewer people in the country to "support", it means way more for the ones at the top of the heap..:(..

It was so sad to see what a beautiful place that once was.. The Portuguese architecture is all shot full of bullet holes and destroyed after 30 years of war..and the people are just so sevastated....and now they are in danger of dying from AIDS as their "reward" for surviving..

3. Africa is a mess all over and gets short shrift in our media
across the board.

When Congo has been the site of the largest death toll since WWII and no one knows about it - thats says something.

If we really wanted to help we could put our money into refief and aid rather than bombs.
