Larry King Backs Out of Michael Moore Interview
Talk show host Larry King has confused controversial director Michael Moore by inexplicably ending talks to book the film-maker for his prime-time talk show.

King's producers were negotiating to have the Fahrenheit 9/11 star on the Larry King Live show - and even told Moore's agents they wanted a White House representative on the show to rebut the film's anti-Bush comments - but King's team have refused to continue with the booking, raising suspicions the president's advisors urged King to reject the outspoken political activist.

And they take calls and do "readings" over the phone? "Do you have a relative who's name starts with the letter "L"? Puleeeze.

Gee, Charlie, maybe it's . . . uh . . . well . . . BUSH SUCKS?

Yeah, I think that's it.

10. Exactly. King got the order "from above"
Not exactly Soviet-style repression/intimidation, but the effect is the same.

The Soviets would have watched in awe at these Busheviks, and carried their plans for ending Liberty bck to their own country for implementation (if it needed to be implemented, which it didn;t in 1978 Soviet Union).

Actually, Comrade Putin did JUST THAT, approriating the Bushevik Playbook for "managed Democracy" and implementing it more swiftly than the Busheviks could EVER dream of because if THEY tried to move as fast as Soulmate Comrade Putin did, they'd have one helluva fight on their hands.

17. Don't forget how CNN lied for the White House re: the Letterman incident
http://www.buzzflash.com/editorial/04/04/edi04026.html

<edit>

After David Letterman aired a videotape of Tyler Crotty, 13 and the son of a Bush $100,000 plus "Pioneer" fundraiser, fighting to stay awake as George droned on and on, CNN host Daryn Kagan dismissed the videotape with the following on-air comment: "We're being told by the White House that the kid, as funny as he was, was edited into that video, which would explain why the people around him weren't really reacting." CNN anchor Kyra Phillips later reran the tape but cautioned viewers: "We're told that the kid was there at that event, but not necessarily standing behind the president."

Accused of misleading his viewers, Letterman called the White House a bunch of liars. (Hey, Dave, we've been doing that for four years. So, don't think you're breaking any new ground here.)

And what do you know? CNN did a sudden turnabout, claiming that the Bush propaganda machine never really called them at all. They vaguely attributed the unfounded allegation to news staff error.

<edit>

What we have here is the distinct possibility, although we can't prove it, that the White House called CNN to try and discredit Letterman. CNN ran with the White House tip, which was brazenly a lie. Letterman then called the White House spinmeisters a bunch of liars on the air. The White House then called CNN and told them that they would prefer that their fingerprints weren't on the original discrediting lie. Then CNN suddenly makes fun of the whole episode and says that the White House didn't ring them up after all.

If you accept this scenario, then a major news broadcaster in the United States lied about a lie, twice. They accepted the White House lie, which appeared ludicrous to begin with, and then lied about the White House peddling the lie to them. Is there any doubt now, if this is what happened, that CNN is just another White House propaganda outlet?

25. And then there's CNN and the Army's 4th PSYOPs Group interns
It's hard to imagine how these guys got a reputation as the liberal alternative.

http://www.commondreams.org/views/032300-107.htm

<edit>

Col. Christopher St. John, commander of the U.S. Army's 4th PSYOPs Group, was quoted by a French Intelligence correspondent, present at the symposium, as (in the correspondent's words) having ``called for greater cooperation between the armed forces and media giants. He (St. John) pointed out that some Army PSYOPs personnel had worked for CNN for several weeks, and helped in the production of some news stories for the network.''

Reading this in Belgrade, where he's Trouw's correspondent, De Vries saw a good story, picked up the phone, and finally reached Maj. Thomas Collins of the U.S. Army Information Service, who duly confirmed the presence of these Army PSYOPs experts at CNN. ``PSYOPs personnel, soldiers and officers,'' De Vries quoted Collins as telling him, ``have been working in CNN's headquarters in Atlanta through our program `Training with Industry.' They worked as regular employees of CNN. Conceivably, they would have worked on stories during the Kosovo war. They helped in the production of news.''

I reported this interesting disclosure in my newsletter, CounterPunch, and made it the topic of my regular weekly broadcast to ``AM Live,'' a program of the South Africa Broadcasting Company in Johannesburg. Among the audience of this broadcast was CNN's bureau in South Africa, which lost no time in relaying news of it to CNN headquarters in Atlanta, and I duly received an angry phone call from Eason Jordan, who identified himself as CNN's president of news gathering and international networks.

Jordan was full of indignation that I had somehow compromised the reputation of CNN. But in the course of our conversation, it turned out that, yes, CNN had hosted a total of five interns from U.S. Army PSYOPs, two in television, two in radio, and one in satellite operations. Jordan said the program had begun on June 7 (just before the end of the war against Serbia), and only recently terminated, I would guess at about the time CNN's higher management read Abe De Vries' stories.

Naturally enough, Eason Jordan and other executives at CNN now describe the Army PSYOPs intern tours at CNN as having been insignificant. Maybe so. Col. St. John, the commanding officer of the PSYOPs group, certainly thought them of sufficient significance to mention at that high-level Pentagon pow-wow in Arlington about propaganda and psychological warfare. Maybe CNN was the target of a PSYOPs penetration and is still too naive to figure out what was going on.

41. Threat of denied access used to keep the media whores in line
I posted this article in the Editorials forum today and it seems it would be quite relevant here as well.

Why the Press Failed
by Orville Schell

<snip>

There's nothing like seeing a well-oiled machine clank to a halt to help you spot problems. Now that the Bush administration is in full defensive mode and angry leakers in the Pentagon, the CIA, and elsewhere in the Washington bureaucracy are slipping documents, secrets, and charges to reporters, our press looks more recognizably journalistic. But that shouldn't stop us from asking how an "independent" press in a "free" country could have been so paralyzed for so long. It not only failed to seriously investigate administration rationales for war, but little took into account the myriad voices in the on-line, alternative, and world press that sought to do so. It was certainly no secret that a number of our Western allies (and other countries), administrators of various NGOs, and figures like Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Hans Blix, head of the UN's Monitoring, Verification and Inspections Commission, had quite different pre-war views of the "Iraqi threat."

Few in our media, it seemed, remembered I. F. Stone's hortatory admonition, "If you want to know about governments, all you have to know is two words: Governments lie." Dissenting voices in the mainstream were largely buried on back pages, ignored on op-ed pages, or confined to the margins of the media, and so denied the kinds of "respectability" that a major media outlet can confer.

<snip>

As Michael Massing pointed out recently in the New York Review of Books, Bush administration insinuations that critics were unpatriotic -- White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer infamously warned reporters as war approached, "People had better watch what they say" -- had an undeniably chilling effect on the media. But other forms of pressure also effectively inhibited the press. The President held few press conferences and rarely submitted to truly open exchanges. Secretive and disciplined to begin with, the administration adeptly used the threat of denied access as a way to intimidate reporters who showed evidence of independence. For reporters, this meant no one-on-one interviews, special tips, or leaks, being passed over in press conference question-and-answer periods, and exclusion from select events as well as important trips.

After the war began, for instance, Jim Wilkinson, a 32 year-old Texan who ran Centcom's Coalition Media Center in Qatar, was, according to Massing, known to rebuke reporters whose copy was deemed insufficiently "supportive of the war," and "darkly warned one correspondent that he was on a 'list' along with two other reporters at his paper." In the play-along world of the Bush Administration, critical reporting was a quick ticket to exile.

Larry, being the Repuke apologist sellout that he is, bowed down to Lord Rove and licked the toejam from Rove's troll feet.

"Anything for you, Master."

47. What has happened to journalism in the US?
At one time, journalists were interested in covering a story, getting the facts right, and then presenting the findings to the people.

Now they cower before thugs and liars, and careful not to look the master in the eye, whimper, "how may I better serve you?"

MM might say we have a fictitious press reporting on a fictitious president who led us into a fictitious war.

Go home larry.

51. Please never confuse TV celebrity hosts with journalists
There is a huge difference.

Especially don't even bother to use King's name in the same sentence with journalist.

55. yeah, he could tell some of his stupid fat jokes about Moore
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 10:44 PM by thebigidea
it'll be nonstop fun!

This is Larry Elder's idea of humor:

Michael Moore's new "documentary" Fahrenheit 9/11 has broken all kinds of box office records. What will be the title of Mr. Moore's next film project?

Bowling for Lunch
Michael Moore Weighs 911
The Doughnut Made Me Do It
O.J. and Me
They Call Me Mr. Lard Butt
Soap is for Republicans
Around Michael Moore in 80 days
In My Mommies Clothes
When Al Franken Loved Me
Fatty and the Fatty Fatness?

--

See, its funny because Moore is overweight... GET IT? ITS HILARIOUS! HA HA HA HA HA!

And for a final laugh, Elder on Bush:

"... someday historians will call you a visionary in leading the war on terror, and in lighting a fuse toward democracy in the Middle East."

Yeah, he lit the fuse alright. BOOM!

67. Larry King is a moron
Anytime I ever happen to flip by and catch him for a few minutes because I'm lured in by an interesting guest, I'm amazed at how emptyheaded Larry King is. The guy's just a celebrity ass kissing whore. Why do you think Ken Lay picked him to do an interview with? You'd have thought Kenny boy was JC himself from the treatment Larry gave him the other night when I caught that interview. Who else would want Ken Lay on their show if they had to agree not to ask him any difficult questions? Going up against Larry King in an interview is about as tough as going up against Glass Joe in the old Nintendo version of Mike Tyson's Punchout.

71. Too bad --King's audience probably has many centrist undecideds.
People who get their news only from TV but like his rather open interviews.
