MI5 calls for parliament 'ring of steel'


MI5 is to call for a steel barrier to be erected around the Houses of Parliament to offer

better protection from potential terrorist attack.

Intelligence officials are said to be outlining proposals for a "ring of steel" defence in a report to be delivered to the House of Commons Commission later today.

The dossier will recommend replacing the concrete blocks currently around Parliament, which officers fear could become "lethal projectiles" in any attack.

It is also claimed there are concerns Big Ben could topple and cause large-scale damage if it is bombed.
