WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior House Democratic lawmaker was skeptical on Sunday of a Bush administration idea to obtain the authority to delay the November presidential election in case of an attack by al Qaeda,

U.S. counterterrorism officials are looking at an emergency proposal on the legal steps needed to postpone the presidential election in case of such an attack, Newsweek reported on Sunday.

"I think it's excessive based on what we know," said Rep. Jane Harman (news, bio, voting record) of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, in a interview on CNN's "Late Edition."

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge warned last week that Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s al Qaeda network want to attack within the United States to try to disrupt the election.

That is, if terrorists strike in New York, elections should go on in the other 49 states. Than, elections in New York should happen ASAP, by absentee ballot if necessary.

I have a deep fear that Bush dirty tricks team will launch there own terrorist strike (akin to controlled demolitions of selected buildings ;-) ) in order to stop an election that will remove him from power.

Because at this point I am afraid that is what it will come down to.

This polarization of the country, this economic division of the haves and the have nots, is by design I am afraid. Bush and his group would jump at the chance to once and for all discredit those who oppose them once and for all. If the elections are canceled for any reason people many many many people well take to the streets.

At that point they will do what he really has been planning. Declare us as subversive and turn the fire power of the Patriot Act and American Armed Forces against us.

IF the War on Terra was going well--we'd not be worried about what Al Queda (or insert terra group name here) is planning to do. Are we to draw the conclusion here that we ARE no safer than we were a few years ago? (Please note: This is in SPITE of the surrender of Civil Liberties in the interest of safety!)

You KNOW that is not what is intended by this latest trial balloon.

So, what possible purpose do they have for putting this out there?

IMO, this entire thing is setting up the October surprise of a foiled attack. I fully expect that the DAY BEFORE the election, you are gonna see about three different arrests for planned attacks, and the morning of the elections you will see some guy in clothing by Skoda (or DuPont) get busted trying to self detonate in a polling place.

FREE advertising of the shrub regime's ability to keep you safe, and as an added plus, it will be run on endless tape loops ALL DAY during the elections. Can't you just hear it?

"The arrests have been made by George W. Bush's Homeland Security, and it is completely safe to go vote for the men who kept you safe."

They may have just telegraphed the entire plan for winning the election--with Black Box Voting help, of course!

"By now you've probably heard the Bush administration's proposal to delay the Presidential election if a terrorist act occurs. May I say this is the most stupid and scary thing I've heard of in a long time.

During the Civil war this country still held a Presidential election. That war was far more a threat to this country than anything Al Qaida could muster. Will we let the terrorists win by suspending our democracy?

Don't get me wrong 9/11 was a tragedy but that by comparison only left me angry. This kind of talk leaves me scared and worried."
