Florida won't use a flawed felon list
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/11/national/11felons.html?ex=1090123200&en=e91c80ee9ca42e8d&ei=5062&partner=GOOGLE

Snip:
ALLAHASSEE, Fla., July 10 - Florida elections officials said Saturday that they would not use a list of people believed to be convicted felons to purge voter rolls, acknowledging a flaw that had omitted nearly all Hispanics.

The problem in compiling the list was unintentional, said Nicole de Lara, a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Glenda Hood.

The decision was made after it was reported that the list contained few people identified as Hispanic; of the nearly 48,000 people on the list created by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, only 61 were classified as Hispanics

The flaw in a state that President Bush won by a margin of just 537 votes could have been significant: Hispanics in Florida tend to vote Republican.

Unsnip..

2. Bush campaign is targeting hispanics
gosh what a funny coincidence! They had to be sure and purge all the black people they can while leaving hispanics alone. I can't believe people aren't being impeached over this.

No Tax-Gate in 2008.

On the other hand, maybe the other journalists will start to practice their trade again and report on the BFEE/Savngs and Loan Scandals before it ever happens...again.

7. You know the sad thing is...
these people who want to fuck vote rigging aren't even competent enough to make sure the list gets checked to make sure there aren't any non-felons on the list. Either that or they are so arrogant that they think no one will find out.

9. It's like a recipe:
all you have to do is modify one ingredient, even slightly, and you have a brand new recipe. I'm sure they can make a couple of changes and claim they have a "new" list.

11. So they want the Latino vote to count, eh?
Well, this'll be one of many things that will backfire on Bush&Co. They ASSUME that Latinos will vote repug this time. OOPS! Too many will have seen F911 by November, like my Latino in-laws, who will NOT be voting for Dimson this time around.

13. The ones I know HATE him.
Though there are divisions and disputes concerning Castro, all the Latinos I know have a general disgust for Bush. For some, it was something that seems trivial, prompted by Shrub's lame attempts to speak Spanish. Bush has NO idea how stupid he looks when he fakes Spanish in public speeches, and has caused many to gossip about his blatant pandering. His persona is something like, "guero pendejo" or "gringo estupido" to some folks that once respected him (the false image of him they at one time had).

14. Good point
Last week the travel to Cuba went into effect, thus changing the time allowed to visit, two weeks within a three year period for immediate family members only. Limits amount of money that can be spent, and items that can be taken with you. The effect is primarily on Cubans that came to US after the 80's. The older Cuban population i.e. those that arrived in the 60's don't as many relatives in Cuba due to fact that most fled with their entire families. Those are the repugs, the younger Cubans are more moderate. Lots of angry folks in Miami. "Don't take a weatherman to know which way the wind blows..."

21. They weren't in 2000
That why the BCF, pulled the Elian rescue. They needed to seal up the Cuban vote.

I wonder if this same glitch in the data, occurring during the 2000 election?

15. Why the HELL weren't we paying attention in 2000?
If the felons list in 2000 had received this kind of scrutiny, I'm sure it would have been dropped as well.

I certainly hope the press starts scrutinizing the felons list in other states that don't automatically restore voting rights.

22. Most people didn't even know about the felons list
in 2000. It didn't become an issue until during the recount.

Too bad we've had four years and still have the stupid laws that exclude former felons from voting in the first place. Then there wouldn't even be a problem.

16. Another big factor in this
is that the "Latino" population in Florida is changing. More and more non-Cubans are now living in Florida. Non-Cubans are very unlikely to vote for that horse's ass, so now they will "fix" the felons list.

18. Read between the lines, folks.. All this means is that they will just
create a new one.....quietly...and closer to the election.. This one got out of the barn too soon, and people were able to cross check for names...in time..

The next one they create (secretly) will probably be as bad..or worse...we just won;t find out in time.:(

19. black box voting
no need to purge the list if you control the voting machines. im sure they will submit a new list and not allow anyone to check it, and katherine harris II will certify the election for bush.

20. GOP Thieves stealing election again
Why isn't this the top story oh great "liberal" corporate media-in a state where the GOP controlled the election process which in turn lead to a GOP court selecting the last President-we have a new decidedly smelly dirty trick list like this? How much more evidence of lies, corruption and proof of bad intent do we need to get this maladministration out of office?
