NBC: Kerry picks Edwards as VP candidate
Democratic nominee to officially announce choice in Pittsburgh

BREAKING NEWS
NBC News and news services
Updated: 7:36 a.m. ET July 06, 2004

WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kerry has chosen former rival John Edwards as his running mate, NBC News reported on Tuesday.

Edwards, a North Carolina senator, met secretly with Kerry late last week. But Kerry advisers said their boss had also signaled his interest in other candidates, including Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri, Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa and Sen. Bob Graham of Florida.

However, NBC's Andrea Mitchell reported that Edwards was the final choice. An official announcement was expected later on Tuesday.

Kerry and his top advisers have shared virtually no details of their deliberations, but that hasnt stopped speculation about a long line of Democrats that also included retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark, Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana and Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware.

36. Jack Cafferty's response was hilarious
He said that Edwards didn't have enough foreign policy experience to be VP and that he was just a trial lawyer who was elected in 1998. Then, Jeff Greenfield said that one could argue that Bush, as governor of Texas, didn't have enough foreign policy experience. Then, Cafferty said that Bush had enough experience because his father had been president. That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in my life.

Yup...gone bubye! So, even an idiot could do better than the current regime sitting in the WH. Edwards is FAR from that and experienced in negotiating/mediating, plus he has integrity and ethics!

Yay Edwards!

96. Re: Edwards inexperience
As you noted that's an easy charge to counter: Shrub had only 4 years experience in any elective office and had left the US only a handful of times before he became president (and a couple of those trips were to far away Mexico). Also, this issue cuts both ways since Republicans have historically had no problem with "inexperienced" candidates. Nixon had been a Congressman and Senator for only a combined 6 years before GOP saint Eisenhower made Tricky Dick his VP. And how many elective offices did Schwartzenneger hold before he took over the world's 5th biggest economy?

37. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable Roller Coaster Ride!
Yeah, I know I said I was leaving in disgust an hour ago. But then decided to check the LBN one more time. When I couldn't get into the site, I knew something was up, and so kept trying.....

Alright, I take back every snarky and uncharitable thought I had about Kerry over the last few hours. My prediction was that he'd either do something amazingly stupid, or amazingly brilliant. For a while it looked like he'd done the former. I couldn't be more thrilled to realize I underestimated the guy completely.

I don't even mind that I still haven't gotten that coveted e-mail.

Condolances to the Clarkies, though. I read about people staying up all night and lighting candles; I love that loyalty, and I can honestly say I would have been equally delighted with Clark. Here's hoping he plays a prominent role in the new administration too!

And *now* I can go off and get some sleep ... funny thing, though, I'm not at all tired anymore...

and happy birthday, Georgie!

To me, he was the most logical choice. He's everything Kerry isn't personality-wise, he doesn't have to depend on the mainstream media to "sell" him to the public, and he's young enough to take over the reins in 2012. Best of all, the Republicans can't STAND him!

ABC SUCKS MAJOR TIME!!!!!!!!

Sheesh! I hate these god damn "pundits" that think they know everything. They say Kerry needs to do this and do that. The same crap they did in 2000.

They had to talk about gw* already responding with a website detailing the facts about Edwards. And also bring on a worthless woman not worthy of being in the Senate from North Carolina.

They also implied Edwards did not have much experience to be President based on statements from scums from the GOP. The rebuttal to that????? Edwards is not running to be President he is running to be VP a good place to train to be President.

56. This is good news
I was afraid he'd pick the boring Gephart, and hoping against hope that he'd pick Clark. Edwards is a good choice, however. He ran a positive campaign, he can debate, he seems smart and he's good looking. There's probably a place for Clark and Dean on the cabinet-I'd love to see Dean as head of the EPA or the Secretary of the Interior, and have a chance to do some good for the environment.

58. Great news!
I think someone as experienced as Kerry having confidence in Edwards's ability to lead says something. And if they bring out the "flip-flop" card due to Edwards being more centrist than Kerry, just tell them that the real flip-flop is campaigning as a "compassionate conservative" and then being an extremest neo-con.

Go Kerry/Edwards!! :bounce: :bounce:

That should help bring in some votes. The whole story of his son being killed in a car wreck, then going through all the fertility treatments to have two more children is very heartwarming. I remember during the primaries when they showed the interview with him and his wife, you gotta love em!

60. Trump for VP
I was hoping it would be Donald Trump. Wouldn't it be funny to see him come out and say "Bush, you're fired." The only problem would be that Trump would overshadow Kerry. I mean imagine what the VP's place would look like. The White House would become the Trump House. This is a great choice for Kerry and all the Bush administration can do is slander him. They have no policy to talk of and can only attack. Lets all do our part to make sure Bush gets sent home.

Trump's a fun idea but totally unworkable. Plus, he'd hog all the spotlight, because that's what he knows best.

62.  Let America be America again.
Edited on Tue Jul-06-04 08:45 AM by seemslikeadream

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed--
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There's never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek--
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one's own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean--
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today--O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That's made America the land it has become.
O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home--
For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore,
And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa's strand I came
To build a "homeland of the free."

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we've dreamed
And all the songs we've sung
And all the hopes we've held
And all the flags we've hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay--
Except the dream that's almost dead today.

O, let America be America again--
The land that never has been yet--
And yet must be--the land where every man is free.
The land that's mine--the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME--
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose--
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people's lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath--
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain--
All, all the stretch of these great green states--
And make America again!

68. I heard it on CNN
I would have preferred Dick Gephardt, since he has far more experience, especially in foreign policy, but he could have done worse. I just like John Edwards; that may be the rationale. He is just very likable. He has ties to labor and the South, but Gephardt has stronger ties to labor and to the Midwest. But it's Kerry's choice and only he knows his own mind. What we have to do now is support this ticket and uproot the Bushes* from the White House. Regime change at home! :bounce:

Now dont get me wrong I am one of the Few DUers that like Gepph. I may not agree with some of the things hes done but hes still a solid Dem Senator for the most part. But a Kerry/Geph ticket would be too centered thus alienateing the libs and lefties. This way Kerry can reach the center to right leaning dems and edwards can not only shore up the south but make the non centered dems happy. Its just my opinion i could be wrong. Edwards is good looking and charismatic.
He started out lower/mid class and is a self made man.

Him being a malpractice trial lawyer will hurt the campaign on the Healthcare issue.
Bush/Cheney will divert blame for healthcare costs on trial lawyers like Edwards.
Remeber doctors have to pay over $100,000 a year in malpractice premiums before they can see their first patient.

92. Mixed feelings
My wife is more sold on Edwards than I am. He seems nice enough, but relatively inexperienced. I was one of the holdouts for Dean getting the VP nod.

On the other hand, Edwards is supposed to be a great speaker, and the idea of an Edwards/Cheney debate is just too precious. It'll take time to see if his past as a medical malpractice attorney helps or hurts Kerry - I think health care reform can best be guided by a physician, not a lawyer who sues negligent or quack doctors.

Even still, I'm go for the John-John team. Let's do this!

93. Kerry did the right thing.
I'm VERY happy. Kerry-Edwards. Two good-looking, intelligent guys with contrasting/complementary backgrounds and styles and voices ... two guys who know how Washington works. Two guys with intelligent, independent-minded wives (who both seem to love campaigning, and also seem to have complementary styles -- a refreshing change from the ascerbic Lynn Cheney and the vapid Laura Bush).

I hope Kerry puts Gephardt in his cabinet. I think he'd be a wonderful secretary of a lot of things. I hope Kerry appoints a QUAKER (or maybe a Unitarian!) to be secretary of defense! And I'm only half-kidding!

This morning, as Chris Matthews blathered on, he made a good point: Because of his Southern accent and working-class background, Edwards will help in southern Ohio! Yes!

Matthews was going on and on about what a millstone Halliburton Dick is becoming around Bush's neck -- and comparing Cardiac Dick to the young, handsome, healthy Edwards! And saying maybe they'd better put Ridge on the ticket to win Pennsylvania. HAH! Does he really think that ineffectual lump of gray protoplasm would win ANYTHING for Bush? (he was my governor, and did nothing but put my state in a massive malaise, and he's a joke as homeland security chief).

Matthews also mentioned that Gov. Ed Rendell (my current governor) had recently "gotten an initiative passed that will lower property taxes for everyone in the state -- so that's going to really give the Dems a boost in PA" (never mentioned, of course, that the "initiative" was about the revenue from the new SLOT MACHINES they're allowing all over the state (which is where I part with my state party, BIG TIME)).

Anyway ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DUBYA. YOU PUTZ!

117. Let them go on the offensive. Their negative campaigning so far hasn't
set anybody on fire and exhausted kings' ransoms in campaign money. Besides, they'll attack and attack and attack and people are gonna look at the nice, young, handsome, optimistic, smiling, cheerful, healthy Edwards who is known for having run a VERY positive, upbeat campaign, and he'll win their hearts. All those attributes translate as "nice" and "positive" with many voters, and he'll win their sympathy because they'll look at the attacks and think - "how can they keep attacking that nice young man?" This will backfire.

Besides, Edwards brings formidable (and WINNING) trial-lawyer debate-oratory skills to the table. He's fast on his feet, personable as all-get-out, and if they try to tarnish him as a trial lawyer, all he has to do is point out that he represented the little guy (successfully) against the big, mean ol' rich corporation. A beautiful metaphor for the entire republi-CON mentality.

This could NOT be sweeter! And on georgie-poo's birthday, too?! Oh, man. Happy happy joy joy!!! God bless us all! Gephardt for Secretary of Labor. Wesley Clark for Defense Secretary. And my beloved Howard Dean for Secretary of Health and Human Services, OR maybe Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (wouldn't it be nice to have a true, fearless, firebrand in there for a change?) - this is GREAT!!! with big corporations on behalf of the little guy) in a debate with dick go-fuck-yourself! Imagine him even just STANDING THERE opposite dick go-fuck-yourself. OH YEAH! Also makes him nicely viable after Kerry finishes his second term, since he's certainly young enough!!! They make a nice two-some for MANY reasons. Geographical balance. Edwards was one of the few actually to win a primary besides Kerry - and it was IN THE SOUTH (along with Wesley Clark, who'd make a damned fine defense secretary). And completely superficially (which, unfortunately, describes the taste of more than a few American voters) they look great together. The lead guy looks like Andrew Jackson on the 20-dollar bill. His costar can't take a bad picture and has both visual and audible charisma coming out his ears with crowds. Plus you add in the fresh, healthy, youth factor compared against ol' snarl-out-of-the-side-of-his-mouth, faulty-ticker dick. Hey, it ALL counts. And it ALL adds up.

I am SO GLAD about this!!!!! I am SO GLAD about this!!!!! Especially after last night, when I went to bed after seeing all those New York Post references about Gephardt. WHEW! What a relief!!!!!

Who doesn't like Bush, and is a little wary of Kerry, likes Edwards, and will almost certainly vote Dem this time.

Where there's one, there's others, right?

121. Bought 10 Kerry * Edwards buttons this morning
at Texas Democratic Party HQ. No word yet when the bumper stickers will be in, I'll be checking back with them tomorrow morning. I'm so glad Kerry picked Edwards! I think we'll see a bounce in the polls, at least I hope we do.

122.
Me thinks the VP debate just might be more entertaining than the Pres. debate.

U.S. President George W. Bush: "I welcome Senator Edwards on the ticket. The
vice president called him earlier this morning, after the announcement was made,
to say he welcomed him into the race, as do I. I look forward to a good,
spirited contest."

Republican National Committee: "John Kerry was against John Edwards before he
was for him. But now he's his running mate. Who is John Edwards? A disingenuous,
unaccomplished liberal and friend to personal injury trial lawyers."

Former Montana Gov. Marc Racicot, Bush-Cheney Campaign Chairman: "I welcome
Senator Edwards to the race as Senator Kerry's running mate. Senator Edwards is
a committed liberal and spirited messenger for his party in an election that
will decide the course our nation takes in turning a recovery into prosperity
for all Americans, and in the War on Terror."

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.: "John is a very good senator, and
I think will make a very strong vice presidential nominee. I wish him the best
of luck. I think John Edwards is a man of high character, strong integrity and
will be a very good vice presidential candidate."

Jerry Jasinowski, president of the National Association of Manufacturers:
"Kerry has chosen a running mate...whose voting record in Congress demonstrates
conspicuous hostility to manufacturing and business. As a trial lawyer, Edwards
brings to his job an inherent bias against innovation and the American
entrepreneurial spirit that is essential to compete and create jobs."

Georgia Republican Party Chairman Alec Poitevint: "The reality is that neither
Edwards nor Kerry are in tune with Southern voters. The only difference between
the two senators is their accents."

130. "John Kerry was against John Edwards before he was for him." <yawn>
"A disingenuous, unaccomplished liberal and friend to personal injury trial lawyers." <snore>

The RNC toads are so freaked out that they're belching up stale rhetoric.

126. This ticket will win the election.
Kerry removes his one weak spot, the southern conservative block that might have defected to the Repugs. But now that he's got a southern good ol' boy on his ticket, the south will go Democrat for sure.

Bush/Cheney must be freaking out. This was their worst nightmare.

:kick:

P.S. I am a Kucinich man, but now that Edwards has come on board, I am much more likely to vote for this ticket come November. I can't wait to see Edwards start baiting Cheney. Ha!
