NYC child killer Joel Steinberg leaves prison

The former lawyer, now 63, served two-thirds of the maximum 25-year manslaughter sentence. He has continued to deny responsibility for the girl's death.


Steinberg left the upstate prison with $104 in earnings from his inmate account and was picked up in a limousine by defense attorney Darnay Hoffmann.

Nussbaum called police after finding the 6-year-old naked, bruised and not breathing. Nussbaum, initially a co-defendant, herself had a split lip, broken ribs, a broken nose and a fractured jaw she said were inflicted by Steinberg.

Hoffmann has said he offered Steinberg a free apartment and a $250-a-week job with a local cable television show. Steinberg will have to make regular visits to a parole officer through October 2012. Now disbarred, he worked in prison as a paralegal.

4. It's too bad they didn't give him a life sentence

That poor child. I remember that case well, he also beat and abused the kid's mother badly.

Since he's getting out, I hope he took advantage of any counseling program offered to him in prison, that he learned anger management skills and that he got the crap beat out of him a few times by inmates so that he developed a bit of sympathy for those who are weaker than he is.

6. That's insane

He brutally abused and killed that little 6 year old girl. How in the heck can they let him go free after serving only 15 years??? If that would have been a black man,he would have gotten the death penalty with NO CHANCE of parol. The system is so unfair,biased and it sucks!

10. It was more than that

She was illegally adopted by Steinberg, an attorney. He had no business taking that child in, but nobody questioned it. The biological mother said she had no idea the lawyer who was setting up the adoption of her infant girl was going to take the baby for himself. That and the fact that he mutilated his common law wife. I saw pictures of Nussbaum before the beatings began. She was beautiful. The whole story was just sick, and that's why it got attention, not just because little Lisa was a cute white child.

and therapy and has gotten on with her life. I saw her on TV maybe a year ago. Didn't they adopt another little boy also? I think his parents reclaimed him. His mother was an unwed mother who finally married the boy's father after this case broke.

I've never even seen prize fighters with that much structural damage to their faces. And, yes, she was quite beautiful before her face was smashed in by his fists. He's a monster.

12. This case was particularly shocking to me

...for personal reasons. It actually took me years to forget about it. Just to see this story raises issues with me that are unresolved.

Does anyone know the author/title of the biological mother's book on this sordid episode? I'm going to have to read it to try to put some unpleasant feelings I have to rest.
