Iraqi Minister Vows Action After Bombings (Slit throats and cut off hands)
http://www.record-journal.com/articles/2004/06/18/ap/headlines/d839csa80.txt

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's defense minister promised a "house-to-house" search for suspects who planned a suicide car bombing near a recruitment center in Baghdad that killed at least 35 Iraqis hoping to join the military.

U.S. forces clashed with insurgents for a second day northeast of Baghdad on Friday, a U.S. military official said on condition of anonymity. snip

"We will cut off the hands of those people, we will slit their throats if it is necessary to do so," he told reporters. "For those people who want to join the new Iraqi army, we will protect them and we will find them a safe location so they can submit their applications."

Asked if the new government would impose martial law if security continues to deteriorate, interim Interior Minister Falah Hassan al-Naqib said: "If we need to do it, yes, we'll do it, we won't hesitate. This is the security of our country ... the security and the life of our people."

3. caught the reference to Iraqi executions yesterday. wonder how this would
"play in Peoria", to be crude, if our hand-picked democratic government in Iraq chooses to execute militants, dissidents and others, traditionally, by beheading.

The reference is a good glimpse at how little we have understood our relationship with the region.

"They are just like us," formerly White House Spokesbots said. "Regular chips off the old Shrub. Our appointed Iraqui Puppet Government is following our example to the T -- and that rhymes with T and that stand for Torture -- right here in Bhagdad City, Torture."

11. Limb removal. How Jeffersonian!
Remind me why anyone with a functioning brain thought we could export our way of life to this country.

Then again, I recommend exporting our way of life to any country. But that's another story.

12. Just a little taste...
of what is about to come to bear in Iraq. As soon as we hand over this country to a puppet government and start pulling troops out one of two things is going to happen.
1) Muslim fundamentalist extremists are going to overthrow it.
2) It will bend to the will of these extremists and we will be in the same place if not worse off than we were before the war.

Either way I'm not putting any hope in cheap oil anytime soon.

14. Yeah but he's in for a rude awakening ...
I think the boys of BushCo. are in for a stark awakening ... the death squads won't work in Iraq. Thanks to our "shock and awe" et. al., the sense of nationalism has caught fire within Iraq. I wouldn't want to be this arrogant dude. Both him and our bud, "what death squads" Negroponte are in for a attitude check. Bank on it ;)

15. I have to say I'm inclined to agree
Negroponte's death squads may be thoroughly penetrated by the insurgency, in which case there could be some nasty blowback.

16. You have to wonder who "we" is here.
The Minister has a bootstrap problem, how to create an army
(to protect things) when you cannot protect the recruits.
