WASHINGTON - Iraq's interim president broke with President Bush yesterday over a U.S. proposal to raze the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.
President Ghazi al-Yawer called it "reactionist" to knock down the prison where ex-Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein
tortured his enemies and where U.S. troops abused Iraqi prisoners last year.
"It's a prison that we spent more than $100 million building," al-Yawer told ABC's "This Week."
"If we consider it's a symbol of Saddam's atrocities, Saddam used to torture people in each and every basement in Iraq, so that means we have to demolish all government entities. That's unwise," added al-Yawer, who also appeared on NBC and CNN.
