Iraq leader: Don't demolish Abu Ghraib

DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Iraq's interim president broke with President Bush yesterday over a U.S. proposal to raze the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.
President Ghazi al-Yawer called it "reactionist" to knock down the prison where ex-Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein tortured his enemies and where U.S. troops abused Iraqi prisoners last year.

"It's a prison that we spent more than $100 million building," al-Yawer told ABC's "This Week."

"If we consider it's a symbol of Saddam's atrocities, Saddam used to torture people in each and every basement in Iraq, so that means we have to demolish all government entities. That's unwise," added al-Yawer, who also appeared on NBC and CNN.

I am looking for the reporters email address. I want to tell him that US troops tortured Iraqi soldiers. It wasn't just abuse. You should chime in too.

1. Thank You ...

... for some fucking sanity. The $100 million price tag is the big issue. But of course, the "new" facility would likely cost $300 million if built by Halliburton. AND, it would likely be devoid of "modern" security cameras ;-)

Somehow, I think that there is an Arab sensibility of "why tear down a perfectly good building????" It's not like there is a real-estate shortage in the desert!!!!!!

2. Malarkey, Shrub had no intention of tearing it
down anyway but what better way to slide out of a slippery slope than to blame the not tearing down on consenting to the wishes of the new("a free society") govt. Reverse psychology is always in fashion with these folks.

3. Look at it this way ...
Let them keep it. And with all the far right Republicans so eager to name something after Ronald Reagan. this is a perfect venue for them.

"Ronald Reagan Memorial Interrogation Center"

Has a good ring to it, Whaddya think?

4. Each and every basement or just each and every government basement?
Sounds like a bit of an exaggeration.

""If we consider it's a symbol of Saddam's atrocities, Saddam used to torture people in each and every basement in Iraq, so that means we have to demolish all government entities. That's unwise," added al-Yawer, who also appeared on NBC and CNN."

I don't believe even Hitler managed to torture people in every basement in wartime Europe.
