U.S. peacekeeping troops leave Haiti
As Marines exit the troubled island nation, troops say the mission was a success; locals give mixed reviews

By Letta Tayler
Latin America Correspondent

June 2, 2004

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Gripping his M-16 assault rifle and setting his face in a determined but friendly gaze, Marine Sgt. David Kaye of Massapequa Park navigates the teeming streets of Bel-Air, one of the scruffier sections of this capital city.

Of the four to six killings of Haitians by Marines (who suspect the higher number but never found two bodies), half occurred in Bel-Air. Marines said the victims fired on them or tried to run roadblocks.
In this country, where four-fifths of the population is illiterate and perception can be stronger than reality, some Bel-Air residents insist, without proof, that the Marines killed many more.

"We know of at least 25 dead from the Americans in Bel-Air and nearby," said Marie Fils-Aimé, a mother of 11, as she stood barefoot near a wall of graffiti and murals lauding Aristide. Asked where the bodies were, Fils-Aimé frowned. "They must have hidden them," she finally suggested. "I don't like them," she added of the Marines. "They should send them to Iraq."

"The highlight was the first two weeks, when everybody was shooting at us," said Cpl. Josh Janis, 21, of Kenosha, Wis.

Nevertheless, several Marines called their experiences in Haiti, the hemisphere's poorest nation, an eye-opener. "I thought where I grew up was rough," said Jones, who grew up near Yankee Stadium. "But at least I had running water and electricity."

1. Great job of ridding the country of its duly elected president,
America. We cannot even get rid of our unelected president at home.
