Archbishop enters communion debate
DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Communion should be withheld only in "extraordinary cases of public scandal," the archbishop of Denver said on Tuesday amid a growing national debate over religion, politics and voting.

Archbishop Charles Chaput, leader of Colorado's largest Roman Catholic diocese, said anyone committing a serious sin such as theft, lying or adultery should not take the sacrament, but "denying anyone communion is a very grave matter."

It's about time! It seems to me that the Archbishops are being a bit less partisan than the bishops. Mahoney has said similar things.

Let's put these fascist bishops in line or, better yet, get rid of them.

1. so, is Communion denied to the abusive priests?
the Church has a lot of nerve talking about politicians being "sinful" when their own lot has been publicly disgraced (finally) over the child-sex scandals.

When they deny the sacrament to their own ranks who have committed egregious acts, maybe they'll regain some credibility.

2. The Archbishop is against political denial of communion.
Taking communion with an unconfessed mortal sin on your soul is bad; this is not news even to old lapsed Catholics. The Archbishop reiterated this when he said "anyone committing a serious sin such as theft, lying or adultery should not take the sacrament". In other words, that's a serious thing--without going to Confession first. But it's between you & God.

The announcements by certain bishops that communion should be denied as a political statement is a new thing & the Archbishop is against it.

3. The collection plate was getting emptier
...and a prominent Colorado Springs Catholic withcrew a million dollar pledge to the church rebuilding fund.

This is how powermad clergy are kept in line.

4. Good! That's two cardinals and two archbishops who have spoken now
Mahoney, McCarrick, Pilarczyk and now Chaput on the side of not politicizing the Eucharist.

This paragraph sums up the idjits on the other side of the issue fairly well:

Why do it? To reassert their authority. Apparently... they think the way to recapture their credibility in the wake of the sex abuse scandal is to act like tough, nasty authoritarians. Instead of humility and openness and transparency..., they pretend that they are renaissance princes."

7. Agreed--he warned the bishops about the risk of coverup years ago
And they didn't listen, more fools they.

Fr G is going to get an acknowlegement in my first published book for encouraging me as a storyteller, as well.

5. Take Away the Tax Exemption!
If the churches play politics, let them pay, just like us folks!
