GOP Creating Own '527' Groups
Top Republican operatives have launched an effort to compete with Democratic groups for large sums of unregulated presidential campaign funds by designating a group with close ties to the Bush administration to serve as the main conduit.

Republicans who once vigorously opposed the fundraising and spending activities of mostly liberal groups who have been working to defeat President Bush are developing ambitious plans to raise unregulated "soft money" before the November election. The Federal Election Commission earlier this month cleared the way for liberal groups to continue raising millions in unrestricted contributions, and now GOP groups are joining in.

3. anyone with a brain could have seen this coming
The theory that we'd be able to compete with the GOP on money grounds was just that - a theory.

4. I don't think Bush can win with more of his over-the-top bullshit tv ads
GOP might be successful with door-to-door or other local events, though. I am fearful of them faking grassroots honesty with bus tours and bake sales.

8. Bake sales
Yes, they could charge $500 per cookie plate and $1,000 per pie.
Here in Minnesota they charged $2,000 for a meal consisting of corn dogs and soda.
;)

5. Copycats
So they yammered and whined that the 527s should be stopped and now they're forming their own? Crybaby copycats!

6. No surprise on their "joining" in -- only surprised that SOMEBODY --
surely there must be somebody -- in the GOP that is enough of a grown up who wouldn't see the transparency of their hypocrisy; and therefore, all the "me thinks they protesteth too much" always backfires with the very people (usually moderates and independents) they need to build onto their own base ... what fools these people! Talk about the gang that can't shoot straight! And, darn if I'm going to interrupt them while they shoot themselves in the collective foot.

9. Where will they get the names and addresses?
The authorities ought to make sure they're not getting info from the RNC or political candidates.

10. They pay someone to comb the voters' lists from the Board of Elections
Most states indicate party affiliation with voting history. The gop then mails to everyone. They use other lists, such as magazine subscriptions or clubs. I have received fund raising letters from the gop. I guess they did not cross-check them with the newspaper's letters-to-the-editor. :kick:

11. They already had them
Club for Growth, Citizens United and a bunch of Republican youth, women, governors and other groups. Dems have more, but Republicans haven't been without their own 527's. They just don't have any real interest groups that people care about.

12. What a crock of whores' shit. The GOP has had 527 groups for years.
and the WP knows it. They used them to keep their donor lists secret.

13. No one knew who ran the infamous "Willie Horton ads" in 1988
It was not the Bush 88 campaign. I don't know if the culprit was ever made public.

14. Maybe I should go work for them
since no democratic groups seem to be willing to fund us for all the video work we do :)

(kidding - but the money would be good I'm sure.. the demo lobbyists I've known always get to sleep on the floor and get no cars for their work while the right wingers hand out cars and hotel rooms, etc..)
