DETROIT - The father of JonBenet Ramsey, the child beauty queen whose brutal murder remains unsolved nearly 7-1/2 years after it occurred, announced his candidacy today for the Michigan House of Representatives.

John Ramsey, 60, launched his widely anticipated bid for a House Republican seat in the affluent Lake Michigan resort town of Charlevoix, where he and his wife Patsy have had a vacation home for years.

"Borne out of the tragedy of the loss of our daughter JonBenet, I have been given a platform," Ramsey told a campaign rally.

"The Bible promises us that God makes all things man meant for evil to work for good. I believe in that promise."

The Ramseys were living in Boulder, Colorado, when the body of their 6-year-old daughter JonBenet -- who had won the titles of Little Miss Colorado and Little Miss Charlevoix -- was found in the basement of their home on Dec. 26, 1996.

The Ramseys took up permanent residence in Charlevoix last fall. Ramsey will be vying for a seat in the state legislature vacated by a Republican because of term limits.

3. He wasn't always.

I worked for his company in Boulder before and after he sold it. He used to be a left-moderate. Obvious events may have changed that. I know that the loss of privacy wasn't good for anyone in that circle at that time.

He may still be a moderate - not all republicans are psychos - just most of the ones to which we are exposed. But, I can't say for certain.

5. Potential bloodbath?

There are at least two others running for that seat (105th District.) We are looking on gleefully (in the 104th) and hoping for a bloodbath in the primary so that a superb 1st timer named Jim McKimmey can walk away with it. McKimmey will make an outstanding rep for them! Very charismatic, knowledgable. Retired school superintendent. The Dems of the 104 & 105 want to change this part of the state from red to blue this year.
