U.N. Panel Finds Climate Change Behind Some Extreme Weather Events
Source: NY Times

At least some of the weather extremes being seen around the world are a consequence of human-induced climate change and can be expected to worsen in coming decades, a United Nations panel reported on Friday

In other news, for the nth year running, the United States remains the only country on the planet where the thinking of a majority of literate citizens is so impaired that they choose to disbelieve climate science.

1. I see the NYT headline writer has adopted "Climate Change," rather than global warming.
Colbert had the Republican consultant who came up "climate change" on his show recently.

Colbert did a "skit" with him that really showed how Republicans plot manipulation.

He was a very smart guy. I wonder if he was smart enough to see that Colbert was exposing him and his Party for the manipulators they are.

4. Frank Luntz advised Bush to change from Global Warming to Climate Change .....
and it's succeeded very well in taking peoples mind's off of the HEAT which

Global Warming makes clear --

It is HEAT in the atmosphere which creates chaotic weather --

RW has many hugely active and prolific propagandists -- from Luntz to New Gingrich --

while the Democrats have remained silent on most issues.

Corporate money busy a lot of silence.

3. Let's remember that Obama should be giving leadership on this -- and isn't -- !!
Nor are Dems -- when was the last time you heard Obama or the Dems talk

about Global Warming --

This isn't going to be happening in "coming decades" -- it's happening right

now --

We're just beginning to feel the effects of Global Warming AFTER 1960 -- that's

because there was a 50 year delay in Global Warming -- other than the melting of

the glaciers which began in 1940's.

Imagine all we did AFTER 1960!

glacier melting and the changing of pressures on tectonic plates is bringing more

earthquakes and more severe earthquakes.

Chaotic weather will continue to increase, as well -- more storms and hurricanes

moving further North -- more cyclones, tornadoes -- and more compounding of all

conditions as Global Warming has the power to change systems -- winds, oceans.

"Congress is under the control of the oil and coal industries" -- Al Gore/Rolling Stone-June

Scientists have known about the negative impact that "bus-i-ness" was having on nature since

the beginning of the Industrial Revolution -- build up for WWII only accelerated it.

Capitalism exists by exploitation of everything -- nature, natural resources, animal life --

and even human labor.

10. then the bush crime family and cia friends arranged the october surprise, got reagan into the WH an
and then began their reign of denial for the oil and nuclear and big energy.

and their most important tool in obstruction has been the right wing radio monopoly (endorsed by the many US universities that broadcast sports on those stations) that created and maintains a huge denial constituency. and the denial only works on such a national ongoing irrational scale because the left has completely ignored wall st's best weapon.

11. Agree -- Really think Global Warming was the impetus for the government takeover by elites/corps ..!
Think it was also in large part the impetus for coup on JFK and people's government --

Global Warming would have exposed the insanity of "bus-i-ness" and shown the suicidal

nature of capitalism.

It would have all been over for elites/corporations much, much earlier!

It's taken huge amounts of money to erect this RW Kabuki -- Hollywood Soundstage set --

Exxon/Mobil spent tens of billions denying Global Warming --

And look at all the fake GOP organizations they've had to fund --

GOP gave start up funding for Christian Coalition --

Richard Scaife financed Dobson's organization --

Other wealthy RW'ers funded Bauer's roup --

GOP/"Pro Life" organizations were financed by white supremacist groups --

and picked up "clinic protesters" from Methadone clinics and paid them!

RW religious fanatics were pushed to provide "pro-life" murder of doctors.

GOP/NRA -- NRA was radicalized to attack liberals and moders not only in the Dem Party

but also in the GOP, thereby moving the Congress to the extreme right. And, did more

for them overall in eliminating liberal/moderate input in every other issue beyond guns!

GOP/T-bagger -- funded by Koch Bros. -- as fake as they come --

Whatever the GOP has was bought and paid for and is fake --

and I'd include the Drug War in that which does the very opposite of what it was intended

to do -- looks more like it protects elite involvement in drug running -- including banks

and money-laundering!

The RW can only rise on political violence -- and we've had more than 50 years of

assassinations of liberal and progressive leaders -- plus an organized campaign to steal

elections -- and a few tons of lies.

And re these comments --

and their most important tool in obstruction has been the right wing radio monopoly (endorsed by the many US universities that broadcast sports on those stations) that created and maintains a huge denial constituency. and the denial only works on such a national ongoing irrational scale because the left has completely ignored wall st's best weapon.

Agree with you on RW radio -- but mainly the point that Democrats/President have been SILENT

on all these issues. There has been no fight back. Corporate money buys a lot of SILENCE!!

The RW wouldn't stand a chance if there was any challenge at all to their lies.

:hi:

12. amen. and more and more i am convinced left can decimate RW radio by getting uni sports off it
universities have no excuse for requiring their students and fans who don't have tvs or streaming, to listen on RW stations dedicated entirely to global warming denial, never mind the racism and misogyny.

students and blue communities shouldn't allow their unis to keep endorsing the limbaughs and hannitys and local blowhards' paid-for denial and partisanship.

if it happened on any significant level they would all feel the shame , pro sports might do the same, and i am convinced it would quickly force many stations to dump the RW programming or balance it with progressives because those uni associations are what bring in their ad revenues.

also, by delaying GW action they improve their opportunities for centralized solutions that bring them tax payer subsidies. and access to minerals at the poles....

13. Doesn't Limbaugh also broadcast to our military still?
Think, of course, this is what Congress should be attending to -- FCC is

completely corrupted -- and Congress is under control of oil and coal industry --

so they're not going to want to free up any broadcasting which may begin to tell

the truth about Global Warming.

IMO, communities or students would be the likely ones to lead the way on getting rid

of it.

In the end it's suicidal -- so it will stop one way or the other!!

8. RW radio, the loudest voice for denial in US, can't survive w/out university sports- no uni has any
excuse for continuing those associations- their 'mission statements' can be used to pressure them off and find alternatives, considering the anti-science denial, along with the rampant racism and misogyny obvious on liombaugh, for instance.

last year 15 of 16 in the NCAA basketball finals broadcast on limbaugh stations. it gives community standing and brings in ad money to those stations, which are dedicated broadcasters of global warming denial and reach 50 mil people a week. they are the main reason we have a major party with its head in the sand and the obstruction is working.

will they argue money over ethics and science? recent misogyny from limbaugh in attacking herman cain's accusers, years of racism and sexism, plus the daily GW denial (he is largely responsible for blowing "email gate" into a fraud issue) that he is part of, would be good ammo for petitioners, etc.

free speech? they are requiring those students and fans w/out TVs or streaming to listen to those radio stations.

let them find alternatives.

14. In other news, the Pope is Catholic. Or at least he claims to be. LOL. Okay, back to the OP...
More important are the solutions offered to mitigate climate change from humanity, not volcanoes, the Earth's position in the universe, the behavior or cycles of the Sun, etc. Can't change that.

Some people in this country are not accepting the solutions being offered because they don't trust the motives of the messengers. I'm not talking those who have bought the RW lies over and over who support the fossil fuel industry as the only answer out of fear.

Others who question the solutions being hyped in the media don't trust what they're being told, either, from the other end of the spectrum. I'm talking about those of us who have actively gone green with solar, passive systems, and everything else.

Myself, and everyone I know, are rabid about reducing, reusing, recycling and taking control of how we live from day to day. it's really liberating in itself. Trying to learn how to get back to simplicity and nature as fast as we can before this over hyped system collapses and takes us with it.

Even though we are doing it all we have found we can do, for our own spiritual well-being, including adjusting ourselves internally, we can't help but have doubts coming from a different angle. We even realize that much of what humanity does is wasteful and harmful but people do it to keep that money coming in. This quote is making the rounds now:

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, he said:

“Man.
Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.
And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;
the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;
he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

Some of the same voices that tell us about climate change seem to look the other way, or not get involved with the more pressing issues of fracking, water and pollution waivers to both industries and development that benefit the 1% and impoverish the environment of the rest of us here on the blue planet.

Globalization of food production, shipping it from abroad, is not figured into the calculations of reductions. The 1% has given themselves waivers by buying carbon credits. On paper this mitigates their harmful activities, but in real world terms, it doesn't.

Neither is the harm done to the poor in every nation factored in. The GOP has given a false dichotomy to the poor who vote for them, saying that any regulation on the environment will cost them jobs, while it is the free trade, let them eat cake philosophy that has cost them their livelihood.

It's always much more complicated than it appears.

16. Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change: Get Ready For Extreme Weather
Source: AP/Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Top international climate scientists and disaster experts meeting in Africa had a sharp message Friday for the world's political leaders: Get ready for more dangerous and "unprecedented extreme weather" caused by global warming.

Making preparations, they say, will save lives and money. These experts fear that without preparedness, crazy weather extremes may overwhelm some locations, making some places unlivable.

The Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a new special report on global warming and extreme weather after meeting in Kampala, Uganda. This is the first time the group of scientists has focused on the dangers of extreme weather events such as heat waves, floods, droughts and storms. Those are more dangerous than gradual increases in the world's average temperature.

"We need to be worried," said one of the study's lead authors, Maarten van Aalst, director of the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre in the Netherlands. "And our response needs to anticipate disasters and reduce risk before they happen rather than wait until after they happen and clean up afterward. ... Risk has already increased dramatically."

17. I thought having my own garden /seeds would not only give us a better food
source than commercial stores but also ensure we always had something to eat not matter what happens, but after a summer of extremes/bad crops it just hit home the message IMO, that all are vulnerable to mother nature and it could get worse .

Not to say being prepared doesnt help ....there are a lot of booklets/info on what to keep on hand for emergencies etc.

Seems we are still in a reactive format vs. proactive in US re: 'natural'disasters and of couse not doing much to stop the progression of climate change either = head in sand and fairy wishes that it will all just get better by itself or if you just pray
