Germany to create national far right extremists’ database following discovery of terror group
Source: Associated Press

BERLIN — Germany will create a national database as a clearing-house for information on far-right extremists amid mounting criticism because its security agencies failed to detect a deadly neo-Nazi terror group for years.

Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said on Wednesday the new database to be used by all federal and state-level intelligence and police agencies will be modeled on a similar registry for Islamic extremists created in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.

“We want to also use this idea, that has been very successful over the past 10 years to foil Islamist terror attacks, against domestic terrorist structures,” Friedrich told reporters.

The minister also announced that the government scheduled talks for Friday with the country’s 16 state interior and justice ministers on how to “improve cooperation in the future.”

2. they were for a while....(hiding from the public) the nazi mentality is in EVERY country
it just bloomed in Germany due to economic factors and a crippled political system bought and paid for by their 1% at that time. I believe this mentality exists in every country all the time, waiting for a perfect opportunity to gain power.

and I spoke with my German cousin about the nazis. Basically they are outnumbered by a vast majority. The nazis are a fringe element in the society. In fact a very popular German band (die Ärzte) had a top chart hit there that was anti-nazi. The anti nazi sentiment is mainstream.

5. Thank goodness that Naziism is passé in Germany. How easily they were led down that path
when the economy got bad in Germany during our Great Depression.

7. Still there and scarier than ever
Years ago it was mainly just dumb disaffected youth. I had run-ins with some, and I can testify they are chickenshits despite the tough facade. Put up a bit of resistance, and they run. Of course us being armed with pipes and chains helped (we picked up what was handy when attacked, we didn't bring with us thinking there would be a confrontation, we were just partying).

But nowdays they're organized and have some smart adults running the show.

8. This is great news
Fascists, reactionaries, and rightists need to be confronted and exposed, especially in a country with a history like Germany's.

9. The erosion of civil liberty's...
The erosion of civil liberty's and the use of government spying is always justified in order to protect the population against evil and terrorism but in reality these laws are designed to keep the 99% in check. One million Americans on the no fly list, haven't we learned anything...
