GOP hopefuls oppose potential deficit deal

By ANDREW TAYLOR

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican presidential hopefuls are assaulting a proposal by GOP lawmakers on a bipartisan deficit-reduction panel that calls for increased tax revenues even as the special supercommittee appears increasingly headed for deadlock.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, campaigning in Iowa, said he would "do everything in my power to defeat" any committee deficit-reduction plan that includes higher taxes.

David Miner, a spokesman for Rick Perry said the Texas governor "wants to look at details but if those details include a tax increase he's not going to be for it. He does not favor higher taxes."

Meanwhile, the No. 2 House Republican, Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia, declined to endorse a proposal for almost $300 billion in higher tax revenues over the coming decade offered last week by fellow Republicans on the bipartisan congressional panel last week.

1. It would be easy for reporters to prewrite articles for the future
GOP opposes Obama healthcare
GOP opposes Obama's military action in Iran
GOP opposes Obama not taking military action in Iran
GOP opposes tax compromise
GOP opposes military cuts
GOP opposes election results
GOP opposes 4 more years of Obama

They could write all the articles over a weekend and take a vacation.

5. Out Of Control Spending
Might make for a sound bite to run with but what does it mean. Two of the fastest growing areas in spending are interest on the national debt and defense spending yet there is not one word on either of these issues. Social Security is paid for. I worked for 50 years, paying into Social Security as a set aside for all of those years. Now that I am retired I am drawing down on that set aside. Should that even be considered as spending? Really. It's certainly not "out of control". Part of the problem then is reporting. It is not true reporting to simply pass along Republican talking points as they are devoid when it comes to the true picture.
