UC regents cancel meeting, fearing violent protest
Source: SF Chronicle

The University of California regents have canceled this week's meeting in San Francisco, citing "a real danger of significant violence and vandalism."

UC leaders said Monday that university police told them that "rogue elements intent on violence and confrontation with UC public safety officers were planning to attach themselves to peaceful demonstrations expected to occur at the meeting," scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at UC's Mission Bay campus.

As the Occupy movement grows across California and the UC, protesters had called for a massive demonstration at the Wednesday meeting on grounds that certain regents with ties to banking and industry "are the 1 percent" responsible for astronomical fee hikes and budget cuts.

Six regents have such ties: Monica Lozano, who serves on the board of Bank of America; Dick Blum, head of Blum Capital Partners, a private equity firm; William De La Pena, past chairman of California Chamber of Commerce; Leslie Tang Schilling, and investment adviser at the commercial real-estate firm Union Square Investment Company; and Paul Wachter-founder and CEO of Main Street Advisors.

3. Are those the same UC police who beat up on the students last week?
I didn't see any students attacking anybody.

They're bold faced liars.

5. It occurs to me that the UC Regents were among the top donors to Obama.
Maybe even *THE* top donors. I'm sure they expected a return on their investment.

Could someone please fact-check this for me? I don't have the time right now and don't know where to find the information quickly. But I've read it on DU before.

9. That just means that UC employees donated
There are thousands of UC employees, and Democrats are more likely than Republican to favor public education and research.

The university itself probably did not donate.

10. I don't think so.
If they donated as individuals, I believe they would donate in their own names and just list the university as their employer. Why list "University of California" as the top donor unless it was the regents who donated?

12. Read the heading to the graph
This table lists the top donors to this candidate in the 2008 election cycle. The organizations themselves did not donate , rather the money came from the organization's PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families.Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.
