Nicaragua election results show lead for Ortega
Source: CBC news.

President and one-time Sandinista revolutionary Daniel Ortega is headed for a mandate to stay in office and to continue his market-friendly social revolution in Nicaragua, overcoming a constitutional limit on re-election and reports of voting problems.

Ortega had 66 per cent of the votes in a representative count early Monday, compared with 25 per cent for his nearest challenger, Fabio Gadea. Conservative Arnoldo Aleman, a former president, was a distant third with seven per cent after national elections on Sunday.

Only seven percent of the votes have been counted, but electoral council President Roberto Rivas said a quick count representative of the entire vote gave Ortega a large advantage as well. The methodology of the quick count was not immediately available.

1. Oh, breaking the law to run for a third term. That's dictator-like! He's a bad guy!!!!
Next thing you know, he'll form Stalinist militias to purge the country of industrialists and hate-radio followers!

:sarcasm:

I'm sure he's a far better alternative to the far right-wingers who were running against him.

Nicaraguan opposition rejects Ortega victory
Nov 8, 2011, 1:26 GMT

Managua - Opposition candidate Fabio Gadea refused to concede in Nicaragua's presidential election Monday, saying 'the struggle' would continue.

In a statement he read to media in Managua, the 79-year-old conservative journalist and radio personality decried the electoral process, accusing President Daniel Ortega and the election commission of 'fraud of ... unheard of proportions.'

Official results announced Monday gave Ortega a landslide victory of 63 per cent of the vote to Gadea's 31 per cent, with 86 per cent of votes counted.

But Gadea said the election was 'corrupt from the beginning' and that Nicaraguans 'had not had a credible opportunity to exercise their democratic right' to vote.

3. Preliminary Data: Ortega´s Electoral Victory in Nicaragua
Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) president Roberto Rivas stated that the FSLN won with 66.43 percent of votes over the four other adversary political forces.

The judge also informed the national and foreign press the percentages the other parties received: the Constitutionalist Liberal Party (7.1 percent), the Independent Liberal Party (25.52), the Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance (0.2), and the Alliance for the Republic (0.074).

According to Rivas, the number of votes reported was as followed: 177,472 were valid and 5,449 were null.

Rivas stated that these elections were a real civic party, despite the setbacks created by the PLI alliance, due to violence actions leaving over many people injured and the burning of electoral materials.

Margin of victory likely to reduce impact of voting irregularities

Managua: Nicaraguan President and one-time Sandinista revolutionary Daniel Ortega was re-elected in a landslide, according to results released on Monday, overcoming a constitutional limit on re-election and reports of voting problems.

Ortega had 63 per cent support compared to 31 per cent for his nearest challenger, Fabio Gadea, with 86 per cent of the votes counted from Sunday's election. Former president Arnoldo Aleman was a distant third with six per cent.

The size of Ortega's margin of victory is likely to reduce the impact of reports of irregularities during voting.

A domestic group of observers, Let's Have Democracy, said it recorded 600 complaints of voting irregularities, a handful of injuries in protests and 30 arrests.
