Former Penn State coach charged with abuse, AD with perjury
Edited on Sat Nov-05-11 01:41 PM by Brickbat

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and another school administrator were charged Saturday with perjury and failure to report in an investigation into allegations that former football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abused eight young men, state prosecutors said.

Sandusky, 67, of State College, was arrested Saturday and released on $100,000 bail, the attorney general's office said. Curley, 57, and Penn State vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz, 62, both of Boalsburg, were expected to turn themselves in Monday in Harrisburg. Schultz's position includes oversight of the university's police department.

Closely identified with the school's reputation as a defensive powerhouse and a program that produced top-quality linebackers, Sandusky retired in 1999. Longtime head coach Joe Paterno, who has more victories than any coach in the history of Division I football, was not charged, authorities said. When Paterno first learned of one report of abuse he immediately reported it to Curley, prosecutors said.

Sandusky, who worked with at-risk children through his Second Mile organization, was charged with seven counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse; eight counts of corruption of minors, eight counts of endangering the welfare of a child, seven counts of indecent assault and other offenses. A preliminary hearing for Sandusky is scheduled for Wednesday.

1. Another indicator of failure in our society when the reputation of the institution is put above...
... the good of the People, in this case, children.

Good on Joe Pa for reporting it.

7. I disagree on Joe Pa
When the accusation is something like this you go to the police...if you want to go to the AD too, fine. But your first duty as a human being in Joe Pa's situation was to go to the cops...he failed.

For sexual abuse of children, one should not use the chain of command...one should go straight to the authorities.

9. Reporting what?
He sent it up the line, where it was clearly covered up, and he did jack squat for damn near a decade, while this fucker continued to abuse children. You think maybe it was a clue to Joe Pa that his good friend Jerry Sandusky wasn't arrested for raping a ten year old, which is clearly what the graduate assistant told him that he'd seen? In State College, Pennsylvania, where everyone who is anyone goes to Sandusky's Second Mile charity events?

Gimme a break. Joe Pa should step down at the end of the season, if not sooner.

15. AND those who covered it up or looked the other way
The grand jury report is absolutely chilling...

This may do more to finally kill the NCAA than any pay-for-play/kickback/rape/DUI/other thuggish behavior/jackassery scandal...

4. And this makes any other NCAA violations pale
in comparison. I don't know what that group of nitwits plans to do since they jump on any illegal acts by students as fast as they can. Since this DOES involve the athletic department, they do have the obligation to make a ruling. I'll bet they would rather eat ground glass than deal with this.

5. Note that Jerry Sandusky is married and has six children. He is NOT gay.
If these allegations are true, then Jerry Sandusky is a pedophile. This is different from being gay. Too often those two things are confused.

Sandusky is married to the former Dorothy Gross of Chattanooga, Tenn. They have six children; five boys and a girl.

6. Agreed that being gay and being a pedophile are not the same, but if you think that
him being married and having kids automatically means he's not gay, well...

17. his kids are adopted....
It has been over 10 years since Sandusky left Penn State to devote all of his time to the Second Mile, a charitable organization he and his wife started in 1977 as a sanctuary, a safe house, for children at risk.

It is a noble undertaking, and it has grown and grown, and it is estimated that it reaches 100,000 kids a year. The name comes from the Sermon on the Mount - "And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile."

Along the way, Jerry and Dottie, unable to have children of their own, began to adopt. They found they couldn't stop, and reached six before they finally got around to stopping. Oh, and there were foster children, too. Always room for one more, somehow.

His mother, Evie, said in an interview in 1982: "It's the way he's always been. I guess it's his nature that he's never quite happy unless he's helping someone else."

8. from the release.... "there is no indication that anyone from the university ever attempted
to learn the identity of the child who was sexually assaulted on their campus or made any follow-up effort to obtain more information from the person who witnessed the attack first-hand. "

That is disgusting. Epic morale failure.

12. Cult mentality.
I grew up in a religious cult. The only thing that could keep this sickness covered up for so long is that kind of mentality.

He won't last long in prison.
