Cain suggests China doesn't have nuclear capability

Herman Cain incorrectly suggests China doesn't have nuclear capability

In an interview Monday, Cain said part of China's threat to the United States stems from its attempts to develop nuclear weapons --
even though China tested its first nuclear weaponin 1964.

"Yes, they're a military threat," Cain said on the PBS NewsHour, in response to a question from Judy Woodruff. "They've indicated that
they're trying to develop nuclear capability and they want to develop more aircraft carriers like we have. So yes, we have to consider
them a military threat."

7. China has a second-tier nuclear capability
Much like the UK or France, they have a limited number of missiles and warheads, orders of magnitude fewer than Russia or the United States.

28. They are thought to have about 400 nuclear warheads
This number will not destroy the world, which is a very large mass of rock with an iron core.

Depending on how many actually launch, how many actually detonate, at what altitude, etc., they may cause some moderate climate change that would severely reduce human populations, but which would actually allow a rebound in animal populations in the longer run.

32. I said destroy the world, not the planet.
And 400+ warheads is enough to destroy civilization.

But don't worry - you'll be safe if you dig a trench and put a sheet of plywood over it.

14. They don't need nuclear capability anymore.
I heard a radio show this morning that included a discussion about where prescription drugs are manufactured and it sounds like most of them come from China. Apparently, we don't even manufacture antibiotics in this country. It's frightening.

the way we do and not China? It is time to begin cutting ties with China and bring industry home to the US. And make it very costly to move businessess out of country, especially to recognized human rights violators like the Chinese.

...she would have followed up with a question aimed squarely at Cain's apparent ignorance. Instead, she gave him a pass (just the way she and others gave W a pass, lo these many years ago). She's a tool.

17. "Develop nuclear capability"
His intent was probably in reference to the DF-31a solid fuel missile and some other delivery systems in the works for ICBM and SLBM's.

The unacknowledged lie is, of course, that China is not a threat to us. They have the capacity to inflict unacceptable losses in retaliation, and that is all. They do not have the capacity to 'win' (in any sense) a nuclear exchange with the United States, and that is how it will remain for the forseeable future.

China has a 'no first use' policy. We do not.
China has not used atomic weapons against anyone. We have.

We invade countries pretty much unprovoked at this point. China has every reason to develop defensive capability.

33. In agreement with you that China is not a threat to us.

China has however invaded other countries unprovoked. Putting aside Tibet and other disputed territories, China invaded Vietnam on February 17, 1979.

Why?

Because Vietnam used the NVA to liberate the Cambodian people from the tyranny of the Khmer Rouge.

This was a damaging blow to China's reputation as a protector force and so China invaded with a force of 200,000 and then added another 200,000.

The US lost 65,000 troups in 10 years of conflict. China lost half that amount in 29 days.

While the conflict did undermine your point that China doesn't invade other countries it reinforces your main point; they are not very good at it.

The invasion was seen largely as a military failure and reinforced the foriegners view that China's army is notable for its size and not its real capability, and is much less a military threat than the hawks project.

Of course the continued occupation of Taiwan by the pre revolutionary government also makes that point, China still hasn't eliminated its formal rival.

35. Yes, that is true.
I specified nuclear exchange, but didn't acknowledge that China has attacked other countries conventionally, very true.

To a degree, I believe they have learned it is not generally a good idea to do so.

19. Alarming ignorance
A major political party's front runner for the office of Commander and Chief is THAT ignorant of major features of the strategic landscape. And still he can be taken seriously by the press ...

Ignorance of that magnitude should be laughed off the stage.

23. Proud to be stupid
If you want to be President of the United States you should know the countries that have nukes

USA, Russia, Great Britain, France, China, Israel, India, Pakistan, N. Korea, and maybe Canada ...

.... Remember last time we had a President who didn't know about foreign policy? ..... W didn't

know the difference between Shia and Sunni Muslims before he plunged us and Iraq into a bloodbath

that is still going on.
