Prairie Home Companion sound effects man Tom Keith dies
Edited on Mon Oct-31-11 12:17 PM by stlsaxman
Source: Minnesota Public Radio

St. Paul, Minn. — Tom Keith, a sound-effects creator for A Prairie Home Companion and former Minnesota Public Radio personality, died Sunday after collapsing suddenly at his home.

The cause of Keith's death was not yet known, a spokesman for A Prairie Home Companion said Monday.

Keith has provided sound effects and character voices for the nationally syndicated show, which is produced by Minnesota Public Radio and American Public Media.

"We loved working with him," said Tim Russell, a radio actor on the show. "It's just one of those things that you can't believe something like this could happen."

Some of my favorite moments of APHC was Tom's work...

a great loss for all fans, co-workers and listeners.

3. I have had many, many years of soul food humor and music listening to that show - he has been
a joy to listen to.

I wish there was an Oscar Awards type program for radio. But there isn't really any program like AHPC and he would have won every year if there was an award.

I hope he will be honored in a joyous memorial.

4. Oh, terrible. That's a true loss.
He was uniquely gifted at that rather strange, antiquated job of home-made radio sound-effects. No synthesizers or digital doohickeys for him. Truly sorry about that. PHC has been a favorite for decades around our house. It won't be quite the same without him.

who does the sound on most of the road shows. Sad day for APHC and Tom's family.

20. I can imagine his coffin lid closing
And Tom inside making the squeaky-creaky-hinge noise. With kind of a grin.

He added a lot to that show.

RIP.

24. Watch the DVD of the "Prairie Home Companion" movie for the extra material with Tom Keith
and the producer of the show. It's stagecraft like you have never seen before.

And there's "bad jokes, dontcha just love'em".

30. Think of what the funeral or memorial service could sound like!
I don't mean any disrespect at all. I was always delighted at how creative and amazing he could be.

It could be the sound effects event of the century and I think he would have loved it.
