Caltech edges Harvard as the best university
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

(10-06) 11:40 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The world's greatest university (think Harvard) is not the world's greatest university anymore.

That honor now belongs to California Institute of Technology - Caltech - which bested Harvard University in this year's global ranking of the top 200 universities by Times Higher Education, a British magazine.

The small, private research institution in Pasadena out-performed Harvard, Stanford, and every other university in the ranking that looked at 13 performance indicators from teaching to innovation - as measured by income from industry - according to the ranking.

Harvard, nudged down to No. 2, shares second place with Stanford University this year. Both earned a score of 93.9, compared with Caltech's 94.8.

2. Well, not to someone who wants to major in art history or German literature
The majors at Caltech are fairly limited, and many humanities options are not available.

I think all these listings and rankings of schools are ridiculous.

4. Caltech is a splendid institution.
Brilliant undergraduates. They compare in intellect to the undergrads at the U of Chicago or MIT. It ain't Arizona State, to be sure.
