Harsh Words for E.P.A. From Most G.O.P. Candidates
Source: NY Times

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency is emerging as a favorite target of the Republican presidential candidates, who portray it as the very symbol of a heavy-handed regulatory agenda imposed by the Obama administration that they say is strangling the economy.

Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota wants to padlock the E.P.A.’s doors, as does former Speaker Newt Gingrich. Gov. Rick Perry of Texas wants to impose an immediate moratorium on environmental regulation.

Representative Ron Paul of Texas wants environmental disputes settled by the states or the courts. Herman Cain, a businessman, wants to put many environmental regulations in the hands of an independent commission that includes oil and gas executives. Jon M. Huntsman Jr., the former Utah governor, thinks most new environmental regulations should be shelved until the economy improves.

Opposition to regulation and skepticism about climate change have become tenets of Republican orthodoxy, but they are embraced with extraordinary intensity this year because of the faltering economy, high fuel prices, the Tea Party passion for smaller government and an activist Republican base that insists on strict adherence to the party’s central agenda.

3. Tell it to the folks in Fukushima
Yeah we need less regulations because we know how well corporations can police themselves, they'd never put profit above the welfare of the ordinary citizen, would they?

4. As the sixth great extinction event in our planet's history goes on...
the repugs would dismantle the agency that protects the environment (what's left of it) in the US. I'm old enough to recall the push to open public lands and wilderness areas to mining and drilling and development under Reagan, then again under Bush. I have no doubt we would see the same thing again if they get back in office, under the guise of "economic growth".

Something about give a man a dead fish, give him a job cleaning up dead fishes, I think. Something like that...

As St. Tammany Parish authorities began to arrange a cleanup effort for a massive fish kill in the West Pearl River, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation reported Wednesday that dead fish have begun turning up in the lake.

The Temple-Inland paper mill in Bogalusa has acknowledged a spill from its plant last week that is believed to be responsible for disrupting the West Pearl, which runs through the Pearl River and eastern Slidell communities en route to the Rigolets.

The discharge -- a mix of pulp from the paper-making process and unspecified chemicals -- has turned the river water black and killed fish and shellfish along 40 to 50 miles of waterway, officials said.

St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis declared a state of emergency in response to the spill Tuesday night. Wednesday morning, he spoke with Gov. Bobby Jindal's office to arrange for manpower to start cleaning up the thousands, if not millions, of dead fish and other aquatic species in the West Pearl and adjoining waterways. Interested local residents were invited to report to the cleanup command post Wednesday afternoon to sign up for temporary work on the fish kill cleanup.http://www.nola.com/environment/index.ssf/2011/08/dead_fish_from_west_pearl_rive.html
