An Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran announced Monday he will challenge U.S. Rep. Fred Upton in 2012, saying the longtime congressman has been hijacked by the tea party and is too radical for the moderate 6th Congressional District.

Democrat John Waltz, 34, has never held public office but launched an unsuccessful campaign against Kentucky's Geoff Davis in 2010 and lost by 69 percent to 31 percent. Waltz said Monday he moved back to his native of Michigan last month with wife and four children saying it was time to fight back against tea party-influenced politics in his hometown.

Waltz headed the Heartland Revolution in Kentucky, which has been active in recall efforts of Michigan lawmakers, before returning to the state.

"He's been wrong for way too long," Waltz said of Upton. "It is obvious that Washington has changed Fred more than Fred has changed Washington."
