MSNBC Inks New Deal With Rachel Maddow
Source: Broadcasting & Cable

MSNBC has signed primetime host Rachel Maddow to a new multi-year contract, network president Phil Griffin confirmed at the Television Critics' Association press tour in Los Angles Tuesday.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Maddow said the new contract is essentially the same as her previous one.

"There aren't major new terms in the deal," she said after MSNBC's panel session. "There are tweaks here and there, but essentially what I have just agreed to do with MSNBC is keep doing what I'm doing for more years. And that's exactly what I wanted."

Maddow said her current contract was not set to expire this year but she took the chance to renegotiate before the upcoming election year.

1. Guess we won't be seeing her at Current any time soon
I was beginning to worry about her -- she had subs last week and this week. Must be on a long vacation -- she certainly deserves it!

http://money.cnn.com/2011/01/18/technology/fcc_comcast_nbc/index.htm

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice on Tuesday approved -- with several conditions -- a merger of the country's largest cable operator, Comcast, and broadcasting company NBC Universal.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/01/29/us-comcast-nbc-idUSTRE70S2WZ20110129
(Reuters) - Comcast Corp has completed its takeover of NBC Universal, creating a $30 billion media behemoth that controls not just how television shows and movies are made but how they are delivered to people's homes.

COMCAST OWNS NBC.

5. Indeed, MSNBC isn't "Blue" and it isn't "Red"...it's "Green"
They want to deliver the maximum audience for their advertisers, and they'll offer the programming that provides an audience that's not locked up by other networks.

6. Super bummed...
Yup, I was one that was SO hoping that she would go to Current TV.

Chris Hayes got a show.

And dirtbag Mark Halperin has been reinstated...as those the Village Idiot Chuck Toady and I'm Really a Republican Andrea Mitchell weren't enough.

Hey Halperin..."Dick"?...Kettle = Black?!

15. I think you forget... before Keith her network had few viewers too.
Keith's success alone makes Current TV a much more attractive option to cable systems then most of what they carry, it's just a matter of time before Current builds up an audience comparable to MSNBC. It's not like MSNBC is blowing away their competition in every slot or anything.

9. So, that might explain her absence
A relaxing fishing trip while negotiating her new contract.

I think its a good thing that MSNBC realizes her value. I look forward to her show every night, she is a Truth Teller & Educator.

Shine on,
Annette

10. Good for Rachel
I'm not a fan of current tv, or whatever it is, so I'm glad she didn't opt to go there, if even she was given that choice.
That Gore fellow is not at the top of my favorites list either.

12. I am delighted to have her back but I am sorry she did not demand
they stick their rethug idiots in some other corner. One interesting item from last nights show with Chris Hayes - they are going to give him a morning show this fall. I like him and am going to subscribe to The Nation as soon as I can.

13. Good news.
Too many people can't afford the cable upgrades to access Current, nor can we afford the high-speed internet required to watch online. Glad she's staying wher more people will be able to tune in.

17. i think she also presents arguments where those who aren't liberal
can be convinced while olbermann mostly plays to the crowd. so having her on a network where more people can see her especially those who aren't liberal is helpful.

20. Who was that guy who was hosting her show last night??
He was exactly like a male Rachel, in speech patterns, mannerisms and facial expressions. It was pretty odd, actually. I had to turn the channel.

23. they grow them in pods at universities arond the Northeast. HA!
I think you mean Chris Hayes, who just got a weekend show. He's smart, too, like Rachel, but neither makes me very interested to watch them, unlike KO. I like people that show passion from time to time, I feel the previous two don't tend to show much emotion, despite being factual, intelligent and pleasant. If I'm not reading online, then I'll check Rachel's show, but really, that network is pretty dull now with Keith gone, and then we lose Cenk.

30. Rachel likes Chris a lot, she has thanked him for guest hosting, saying
he did a really terrific job in her absence.

She probably requested Chris to host for her while she is away.

22. I wonder if one of the "tweaks" she got was the right to change the set?
She didn't like the set design she was given, she hated the blocky color scheme and said so on air.

I hope she negotiated the right to have the set design changed to whatever she wants.

And I'm really glad she's happy doing what she does, and will be doing it for some time to come!

25. She never clicked with me on Air America. I don'tknow why because now I love
her on TV. I had nothing against her radio show, it just didn't catch my interest. I would listen to Stephanie Miller, then Al Franken, then Big Eddie. Loved them all. They kept me sane after Kerry lost in 2004...

26. I miss Air America
It's a shame it wasn't successful financially.

But I think it was tremendously influential during its short life. It's impact is still being felt a la Rachel, Al Franken, etc. even today.

31. I wondeer if Cenk's untimely departure had anything to do with her premature contract re-negotiation
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 02:10 PM by No Elephants
With campaign season underway, she had some leverage.

Maybe she negotiated for some notice before she got fired and/or a better severance package.
