Jeffs trial: judge allows evidence
July 28 2011 at 08:31am
By WILL WEISSERT

San Angelo, Texas - A judge on Wednesday dealt a blow to the defence of polygamist religious leader Warren Jeffs, refusing to suppress evidence police seized during a 2008 raid on his sect's remote West Texas compound.

Judge Barbara Walther's decision clears the way for a small mountain of documents - including marriage and birth records, and thousands of pages of Jeffs’s own writing in personal journals - to be presented to the jury during Jeffs’s sexual assault trial. Jurors also may be able to see DNA evidence collected from children living on the compound, after one more suppression hearing.

Opening statements in the case are now set for Thursday morning.

This time, Jeffs’s attorneys are seeking the suppression of evidence recovered when Jeffs was arrested, after a 2006 traffic stop along a highway outside Apex, Nevada. Walther said she would hear arguments on that for about an hour before the jury is seated, then wanted both sides to be ready with opening statements.

10. Unbearably sad. The parents clearly have NO sense of responsibility for their child.
How can a cult brainwash people that completely they have NO protective concern for the well-being of their little girl, anyway? Is it the cult, or were they mentally defective before they joined? My God.

Thanks for that sad, sad reminder. People shouldn't forget what these clowns are doing to the lives of innocents.

11. i really think this is the test of a cult.
monkeys invented politics and hierarchy in large part to see who gets the girls. most of us have evolved to become more civilized than that.
but when people start offering up their children to their leaders, they need to get what is coming to them. hope this bastard spends a long, long time in prison.

4. There are a lot of mormons just like him out there.
Jeffs is just being made an example of. Those clowns have been doing this for years. Put in a cage is not enough for these sick bastards. Let Bubba get his hands on them.

5. agree
I am amazed Jeff's defenders and the FLDS appologist brigade hasn't taken over this thread yet, the web was crawling with them the last time he was tried and anytime this vile cult is in the news for it's abuses. I am hapy to see that people are not sticking up for this cult's so called rights as much. The widespread existence of their child abusing ways is a disgrace to this country IMO.

6. People here were defending this?
The marriage of 12 and 14 year olds to old men? And they're the biggest welfare cheats in the country. Since reading Under the Banner of Heaven, I've been keeping my eye out on this group hoping there would be consequences.

7. Declaring any negative that reflects on the mormon church or
it's other sects or whatever you call them, can bring the wrath of some mormons. There are a lot of polygamists RIGHT NOW. There are rabid reichwing fundamentalist mormons that are armed and ready to make someone pay a "blood atonement" for their transgression against the mormon church. They act like they are so persecuted. Just read a history of the church, NOT written by some mormon appologist.

It's America's homegrown religion.

8. Yes, some time back
I insulted FLDS on DU and was met with RAGE and an outcry that I was against the Constitution and such. It had no effect on me other than I was inspired to put all the men in that thread on "ignore" for some time, in fact, they were my ignore list for about a year.

On various news sites I've seen the defenders swoop in (during a burst of disgusting truth getting in the news about this cult) like an organized attack, belittling and countering people whose comments they don't like with the same arguments and spew over and over. This may not be organized but it certainly looked to me like they swarmed for the purpose of shutting down argument by wearing people out. I've noticed since then on a couple of liberal sites that FLDS stories won't get many comments. I figure people just get tired of being badgered. I know I try to not open threads about them because I just expect that if I comment I will just get slammed hard and I have worn myself out with it in the past.

That's just what I've seen, and I'm not trying to say anything bad about DU at all, I've seen it on several sites, and I do think it is a particular core of people with a goal of defending this cult.
