By TOM HAYS

Associated Press

NEW YORK —
The FBI has opened an investigation into allegations that media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. sought to hack into the phones of Sept. 11 victims, a law enforcement official said Thursday.

The official spoke Thursday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

New York City-based News Corp. has been in crisis mode.

A rival newspaper reported last week that the company's News of the World had hacked into the phone of U.K. teenage murder victim Milly Dowler in 2002 and may have impeded a police investigation into the 13-year-old's disappearance.

23. When Fox Noise goes silent, I'll rejoice, not before
Ailes and his battery of lawyers will just laugh their way in and out of court.

The day they leave court in handcuffs and on their way to the federal pen will be the day I celebrate.

Until then, they'll just play themselves to be the victims, and the Foxsuckers will write death threats
to the FBI telling them to leave poor Roger Ailes alone.

24. MURDOCH is a RIGHT-WING HERO
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 05:00 PM by nikto
Only moral, ethical people are upset at Murdoch and his abuses of power.

Conservatives everywhere are secretly afraid that one of their own shining knights of misinformation might be brought crashing down & no longer be able to "Catapult the propaganda"
always on behalf of Corporate Rightwing causes.

Murdoch may be immoral scum to most, but he is a Knight In Shining Armor to ALL
dedicated rightwingers--HE IS, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN, ONE OF *THEIRS*.

Bottom Line: If Murdoch and his empire go down in flames, Right Wing interests everywhere will suffer and be weakened. They will be forced to depend on the likes of Reverend Moon and his Washington Times.

Fun times ahead.

29. WSJ: Murdoch Defends News Corp.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304521304576446261304709284.html?mod=wsj_share_twitter

"In his first significant public comments on the tabloid newspaper scandal that has engulfed his media empire, News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch vigorously defended the company's handling of the crisis but said it would establish an independent committee to "investigate every charge of improper conduct."

In an interview, Mr. Murdoch said News Corp. has handled the crisis "extremely well in every way possible," making just "minor mistakes."

News Corp. owns The Wall Street Journal."

Last shred of integrity gone from the Journal.

41. The actual claim came from a single source
The 9/11 allegation surfaced in the Daily Mirror which claimed on Monday that an unnamed former New York cop, now a private investigator, was contacted in 2001 by News of the World journalists who said they would pay him to retrieve the private phone records of dead victims. They were particularly interested in British-born victims.

The strength of the Mirror story is uncertain. It is attributed not to the private investigator himself but to a 'source', again unnamed.

The source was quoted by the Mirror as saying: "His presumption was that they wanted the information so they could hack into the relevant voicemails, just like it has been shown they have done in the UK. The PI said he had to turn the job down. He knew how insensitive such research would be, and how bad it would look."

Read more: http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/81721,news-comment,news-politics,fbi-launch-investigation-of-911-hacking-claim-rupert-murdoch-news-international#ixzz1SA0D7ZLh

Since then The Mirror seems to have been quiet on the subject. Given that the allegation derives solely from them I assume they can back it up. If they can't then maybe expect a rather large libel case here in the UK in the future.

are always full of right-wingers. When the Democrats take power, they don't like to "clean house" like the Republicans always do. Thus, nothing important will come of this investigation. But they still have to provide the illusion of a good-faith investigation.

Too many times, powerful organizations like Newscorp have been investigated, and nothing ever comes of it. It's just a dog and pony show they throw out to the masses to show that they actually do something other than sit on their asses.

But if you want my prediction, no prosecutions will ever come about from this, and Newscorp will walk away scott free.
