Mexico reporter, his son and wife shot to death

VERACRUZ, Mexico — A journalist, his wife, and their 21-year-old son were shot to death inside their home in this Gulf coast city Monday, authorities said.

Journalist Miguel Angel Lopez Velasco and his family were shot with a 9 mm handgun, said Veracruz state prosecutor Jorge Yunis.

Lopez Velasco wrote a column about politics and crime and was editorial director for the daily newspaper Notiver. His son had been working as a photographer for the same newspaper.

Yunis said investigators haven't determined a motive in the killings and no one has been arrested.

1. Kicked and recommended.

Press freedom groups say Mexico is the most dangerous country in the Americas for journalists. More than 60 reporters have been killed in Mexico since 2000, according to the National Human Rights Commission.

Thanks for the thread, villager.

2. Oh my, whatever could the motive be?
And let's all hold our breath while the investigators search for the killers.

4. Crime...I suspect is related to...drug traffic...and
I suspect these people were victims of the "war on drugs"..

If the so called "illegal drugs" were legal...you know what I am talking about...

these people would still be alive....I guess we haven't learned much from prohibition...............

7. If the so called "illegal drugs" were legal...
...I believe the cartels would still be killing each other and innocents over territory and the opportunity to import 'legal' drugs. The situation is too far gone. The Mexican government is still too ineffective and in some cases, corrupt. The Cartels will not just hand over the business to the government to be regulated, taxed etc. I'm not saying that I'm against legalizing certain 'soft' recreational drugs, I'm just saying that suddenly legalizing them wouldn't curtail the violence. Then there's the issue of the cartels' move into human trafficking... and should all 'illegal' drugs be made legal? Heroin? Cocaine? Meth? This is a complex issue, as I'm sure you are all aware, and I don't pretend to have the answers. But, I do have a lot of questions...

9. they are NOT just running drugs
Exactly a point I was trying to make. I mentioned the human trafficking. The violence will not stop simply by legalizing 'illegal' drugs. It seems here that is what the consensus believes will solve the problem. I don't believe so.

5. it occurs to me it's redundant to say he wrote about "crime *and* politics"
...since both are indistinguishable -- and not just in Mexico -- in this era...

12. Gunmen execute Mexican journalist, his wife and son
Source: Miami Herald

MEXICO CITY -- Assailants early Monday burst into the home of the deputy editor of a newspaper in the major port of Veracruz, gunning down the 55-year-old journalist, his wife and his son.
The executions were the latest in a particularly grim month for Mexican journalists, bolstering Mexico's status as the most murderous place in the hemisphere to work in the media.

16. The fact that many of the guns came from here doesn't in any way shape or
form justify those murders. Where is your outrage at the murderers?

20. I didn't mention justification, just asked a question.
In large part, drugs and human cargo are paid for with cash and guns.

19. Oh for fuck's sake...
if you have money, you can get guns all over the world. Hell, AK-47 come a whole lot cheaper than American made assault rifles.
