Massachusetts couple slightly injured after plane hits duplex
Associated Press
PORT ORANGE, Fla. - A Massachusetts couple suffered minor injuries when their small plane crashed into a duplex, leaving a 20-by-10-foot hole in the roof.
There were no reports of injuries on the ground or in the duplex at the Spruce Creek Fly-In community after Wednesday night's accident.
The pilot, Michael Rezendes, 51, had minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene, said Volusia County Fire Services spokesman Walter Nettles.
His wife, Kathleen, also 51, was taken by ambulance to Halifax Medical Center in good condition, officials said.
The Rezendeses, from the Boston suburb of Scituate, Mass., are visiting family members at Spruce Creek Fly-In. They were returning from a day trip to Stuart, authorities said.
Their twin-engine Beechcraft King Air was attempting to land at 7:15 p.m. when it crashed, said sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught.
The fuselage separated from the tail and its engines before coming to rest behind a home.
The Environmental Protection Agency was notified of the plane crash because an undetermined amount of fuel spilled into a retention pond, Nettles said.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
