Tunisia condemns "repeated violations" of territorial integrity by Libya

TUNIS, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The Tunisian interim government reiterated "strong condemnation of the dangerous violations of its territorial integrity by Libyan forces" in a communique released Saturday, the official press agency TAP reported.

The condemnation came after some 80 mortar shells fired from Libya fell on the Tunisian side of the border near Dhehiba on Saturday, according to TAP.

The Tunisian authorities consider these violations as extremely dangerous for the Tunisian people and territorial security, the government said, stressing their negative consequences on the relations between the two countries.

Tunisia will take whatever measures it deems necessary to preserve its territorial integrity and the safety of its inhabitants and refugees "within the framework of international law," it said.

1. Next step, NATO ground troops at the request of Tunisia. One way or the other we are determined to
put troops on the ground to ensure the correct outcome to the Jasmine Revolution.

2. Is Qaddafi just trying to piss off the Tunisians? Or,
or is Tunisia allowing the rebels to use its territory as a sanctuary, re-group, re-supply area, a base from which to send combatants into Libya?

If Tunisia is helping the rebels, it has allowed itself to become a target, much like Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam era.

If Tunisia is not helping the rebels, then the mortar attacks are curious and unwise.

There's not a lot of detail in the linked article.

3. No, there wouldn't be.
In the past the Tunisians have defended rebels that retreated across the border when Libyan army folk chased them.

They allow the rebels to import materials and materiel; they have an embargo against Qaddhafi's government.

Either of these things is an act of war, openly siding in hands-on way with the government's enemies. We don't like saying this, though, because it makes the good guys look not so good and the bad guys not so bad. Our white must be brilliant white; our black must not emit any radiation at visible wavelengths.

The Tunisians tend to say good things when rebels take border posts; they say bad things when Qaddhafi's men take them back. That's not an act of war.
