Chunk of Calif. coastal highway falls into Pacific
Source: Yahoo News

CARMEL, Calif. – Engineers on Thursday were working to figure out when they'll be able to reopen a stretch of California coastal highway that collapsed into the ocean, blocking traffic to the scenic Big Sur region.

A 40-foot section of Highway 1 crumbled just after 5 p.m. Wednesday following several days of rainy weather. The entire southbound lane is gone, and the soil under the northbound lane also was giving way.

No one was injured in the slide, the California Highway Patrol said. Authorities have closed the two-lane road to traffic indefinitely.

The collapse occurred south of Carmel near Rocky Creek Bridge, one of the iconic arch bridges that make the stretch of roadway, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, one of the country's best known scenic drives.

5. This happens all the time. that part of the hiway is very old and fragile....
I rode my bicycle past such a landslide - I was headed south, southbound lane gone, the northbound lane OK at that point.

Big fun, if you think butt pucker is thrilling.

9. Actually it is the result
of failure to account for the ever changing (since the beginning of time) coast and natural forces of nature. I remember reading about Native American's complete disbelief when white people built their cities in permanent structures invariably on the banks of rivers. But that has worked out OK....we just changed the coarse of those rivers and built flood diversion canals, and built flood walls, and augmented the banks of the rivers, and dredged the rivers to allow for more flow, and.....Those silly Native Americans didn't know what they were talking about...

11. This happens on a semi-regular basis.
Hwy. 1 is always blowing out. They'll fix it, as always, and re-open the road. Hwy. 1 and all the towns it goes through garner too much tourista dollars to have it out for long.

SoCal is absolutely STUNNING this spring. The drive up the coast on PCH should be taken soon by anyone who loves the coast and PCH before the next wave of gas price increases. This will take all summer to repair, if not an entire year forcing traffic east to the muthufukkin 101 and five, yes five simulcasts of Rush Limbaugh on five radio stations of the "liberal media".

Bummer, man.

Did I say stunning?

17. Another reason to tax the rich.
It shows that the people's taxes aren't enough to keep the maintenance going.
