SFGATE.COM(03-11) 06:38 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- The horrific tsunami that washed away buildings in Japan could be headed to Northern California, with much smaller, 2- to 5-foot waves possibly hitting local beaches later this morning, according to the National Weather Service.
In California, waves could start hitting Crescent City around 7:23 a.m., according to the weather warning. San Francisco could see the waves at the Golden Gate around 8:08 a.m., and Santa Barbara by 8:17 a.m.
"Stay off the beach," National Weather Service forecaster Diana Henderson said at 6:15 a.m. "It's not just one wave, it's a series that could last up to 12 hours after the initial arrival. So even after 8:30 a.m., please still don't go to the beach. It will be a series of inundations."
Kelly Huston, spokesman for the state Office of Emergency Services, agreed, saying, "It's not like it's one surge of water and it's over. People shouldn't say, 'Oh, it's 9:30, so everything's great.' There will be some surges after the first surge." Huston added that the first surge may not be the largest.

After seeing the images from Hawaii, I don't think it will be as bad here in San Francisco. The waves will probably be a little higher then normal, but not so bad that they will do much damage.
