AOL cuts 900 jobs worldwide, 20% of workforce
Source: Newsnet5

Posted: 11:11 AM

NEW YORK - AOL said Thursday it will slash 900 jobs worldwide, or nearly 20 percent of its work force, partly to eliminate overlap that stems from its recent purchase of The Huffington Post.

About 200 of the cuts are from AOL's content and technology departments in the U.S. The remaining 700 are at AOL's offices in India, which mainly provides back-office support to the U.S. But AOL spokesman Graham James said 300 of those will move to other companies that are taking over support functions.

Thursday's cuts leave AOL with 3,500 employees in the U.S. and about 500 overseas.

8. If it were anyone else, and any other situation...
...she would already have a prominent, finger-pointing op-ed front and center on the HuffPo home page. And yet...remarkably...when I go there right now, there is nothing.

It's always been about Adrianna, from day 1.

900 workers, or average annual full time salaries and fringe benefits of about

$72,000 per worker that is going to be cut.

Somehow, I bet that's NOT the annual average salary at AOL..much lower.

And supposedly AOL bought Huffington to INCREASE their revenue by the purchase.

So we can say that 900 people had to lose their jobs for this purchase?

Gee!

9. I've had an email accoutn for nearly 20 years and actually paid for
it for at least ten of those years, until they finally made it free. I intend to keep it for free, simply linking it into my outlook account for as long as it is possible to do so. I have no need to go over to AOL or to give them ad revenue by doing so, that way.

13. Corporations by other corporations and lay off works so the stock price goes up and the
shareholders make money. Corporations have a firm grasp on control in this country.

4. The administrators should take the HuffPost link off the DU front page, IMO.
There was a time when it made sense, but not anymore, IMO.

7. While I hope those people are rehired in some capacity
I'm in no hurry for the content people to find work in the same field. AOL is notorious for content slanted heavily to the right.

In this case, perhaps the merger was a good thing.

10. "Overlap?"
What overlap? HuffPo has no staff that is redundant with the AOL staff.

Thanks, Arianna, for adding more people to the ranks of the Third World America..

16. Amazing that it's still around but even more amazing...
that 900 people have to lose their jobs just so they can put make an official link to the Huffington Post - at least 1/3 of that site is absolute dreck. I'm talking TMZ gutter territory - right next to thoughtful blog posts! I like Arianna but seriously.... the right side of that homepage needs to go. It's hard to take a political statement seriously when it's next to whatever was discovered in Justin Bieber's turned over garbage bins.
