A PRIVATE plane belonging to embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi with unknown passengers aboard has crossed Greek airspace en route to Egypt , a Greek defense ministry source said.

"A private plane of Gaddafi has crossed Greek airspace en route to Egypt," the ministry source said.

"We do not know who is on board."

A Greek air force source said the plane was a Libyan Airlines Falcon 900 that normally carries VIPs, though the pilot denied that dignitaries were on board.

"The pilot tabled a flight plan from Tripoli to Cairo," the air force source said, adding: "The plane crossed southwest of the island of Crete around an hour ago. It should be landing in Cairo by now."

Gaddafi on Tuesday had called Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, the Greek leader's office said. In the discussion, Papandreou had told Gaddafi to seek a peaceful resolution to the rebel uprising against his government.

11. "Greece" includes Crete and other islands.
Crete in particular is well within radar range of the North African coast (and it's not wise to be flying over Eastern Lybia these days, so a course over the Eastern Med would likely be taken instead).

8. Questions on a AWAC-report
Malta is a EU-member, but not a NATO-member. Dilemma's?

A report:

----
Some Libyan rebel groups have called for limited military assistance, such as targeted air strikes.

However, one US Senator has said direct military intervention would be counter-productive. John Kerry said the international community should prepare a no-fly zone, in the event of a massacre of civilians by the Libyan air force.

Much of the military equipment needed to enforce a no-fly zone is already based on the Mediterranean island of Malta.

Al Jazeera's James Bays reports from Malta.

Has Gaddafi fled Libya? Three private planes 'leave country bound for Vienna, Athens and Cairo'

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:53 PM on 9th March 2011

Three private jets owned by Colonel Gaddafi today left Libya headed for Vienna, Athens and Egypt, according to reports.

Greek officials said they spotted one Libyan Airlines Falcon 900 jet as it briefly entered airspace for around 15 minutes earlier this morning.

The sightings have already prompted speculation that Gaddafi or members of his family have fled the country.

The planes usually carry Libyan officials and VIPs but it is not known who was on board the aircraft.

17. Gaddafi envoy lands in Cairo
Three of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's private planes have taken off from a military airstrip near Tripoli.

One of them has landed in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, carrying on board Abdelrahman al-Zawi, the Libyan deputy defence minister, who is also an army general in charge of logistics and supplies.

There were reports that he was to meet with Amr Moussa, head of the Arab league.

meanwhile, the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper said the official was to meet with the military council which is ruling Egypt.
