Fighting in Libya takes center stage on day of Arab protest

CAIRO — Hundreds of thousands of Arabs demonstrated throughout the Middle East on Friday, supporting the besieged rebels in Libya and reiterating their own demands for democratic reform in a collective uprising that now stretches from North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula.


Battles raged overnight Thursday and all day Friday in the western Libya cities of Misrata and Zawiya, where Moammar Gadhafi’s military sent in tanks and ground forces in an effort to reclaim rebel-held territory, witnesses said.

There were also reports of fighting in the eastern city of Ras Lanouf as rebels moved forces west along the coastal highway to tighten the approaches to a key oil terminal at Brega, where they'd beaten back a Gadhafi attack Wednesday.


Gadhafi warplanes bombed the area for a third straight day. There were no firm reports of casualties.
