Omaha World Herald-APDES MOINES (AP) — Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad said Wednesday that he’ll bargain hard with unions representing state workers but has no plans to seek an end to their collective bargaining rights
Branstad also said, however, that he will push the unions to make big changes to the most recent contract that was bargained with his predecessor, Democratic Gov. Chet Culver. Republican Branstad wants reductions in pay and benefits.
Branstad said he also supports removing insurance from the items that the state is required to negotiate with workers but intends to keep a collective bargaining agreement with unions representing state workers. Other benefits such as pensions, vacations and medical leave will remain on the table, the governor said.
“The situation is different at all levels,” Branstad said. “Wisconsin has got a much worse situation.”
