Egyptians Order Pizza for Wisconsin Protesters
Edited on Mon Feb-21-11 07:45 AM by Joanne98
Source: Politico

In an act of intercontinental solidarity, an Egyptian has ordered a pizza for Wisconsin protesters, reports Politico. The call from Africa is just one of many streaming into the Madison, Wisc., pizza parlor Ian's from all over the world. So far, people from 12 countries and 38 states have rung up looking to help get free pizza to the Wisconsin protesters clustered in the Capitol. On Saturday, Ian's distributed more than 1,000 free slices and sent 300 pizzas to the Capitol. The trend continued on Sunday, as staff member fielded calls from as far away as Turkey, Korea, Finland, China, and Australia. The trend began when a mother of a University of Wisconsin student called in offering to donate $200 to feed the people occupying the Capitol. The pizza chain's postings on Twitter and Facebook soon led to so many donations that they had to shut down on Saturday night.

Ian’s Pizza in Madison: 30 states/5 countries buy pizza for workers!
Posted on February 20th, 2011
Incredible story from Ian’s Pizza, on State St. in Madison!

They are only serving the workers rallying in Madison and have shut down normal operations; you can call and buy a pizza too:

608.257.9248 - Ask for Protester Pricing!

https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10150392414640048&id=187063310047

This is astounding! As of right now, Ian’s Pizza on State’s normal in-store and delivery operations are on hold — due to the high volume of calls, we are only processing orders donated to the protesters. By our (rather harried) count, we’ve heard from 30 states and 5 countries (including Egypt, Korea, and our northern friends, Canada). Wow.

Thank you!

To our regular customers: We really apologize, but… wow.

They know that the Americans protesting in Wisconsin are not the same people as the ones who propped up Mubarak for 30 years. So much for simplistic soundbites about "hating America".

I just called in an order from Columbus, Ohio. Just one pizza sure wish I could do more. You people are helping to make history!

all the best,

Hey Tom,

Vive la revolucion del Cheddar indeed!

Thanks so much for writing! This has been an incredible week for us, and we've met (via Facebook/telephone/email) so many wonderful people, generous people.

What doesn't feel like much -- your one pizza -- will feed 8 hungry (and probably wet & cold at this point) people and will be so, so appreciated.
We are grateful to have played even a small part in all this.

Please do stop by and pick up a slice for yourself if you ever make it to town -- find your way to the office & your meal is on me.

Thanks again,
Staci

Of course we use good Wisconsin cheese (is there any other kind from Wisconsin?)
The cheddar comes from the Stevens Point area and both the part-skim & whole milk mozzarella are all Grande.
Mmm. Cheese.
Thanks Tom!

Edited on Mon Feb-21-11 03:45 PM by Botany
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ians-Pizza-on-State/187063310047

If you are here to learn how help feed the protesters in Madison, here's how you can do that:

Call us at 608-257-9248, then press 1. As we have just three phone lines it may take a while to get through, and we apologize
in advance for that.

For online ordering we have partnered with both badgerbites.com and campusfood.com to process our online orders. If you would
like to order online, please put 115 State Street as the delivery address, and add in the notes that you would like to help feed the protesters.

While we thought about it, we will not be setting up a Paypal account, even though we realize that would make it easier. Please understand
it's not because we don't want to help you out; we really just don't want to over-promise & under-deliver.

It's important to us as a business and as individuals that if we say we are taking your hard-earned money to help feed supporters, that we
will make sure that happens. By taking phone calls and online orders only we can ensure that the money you spend with us does indeed get
made into pizza that goes to the capital.

We truly appreciate all the enthusiasm, and know that many of you want to help feed the protesters, but we are also just one small business.
Believe us when we say we are not really accustomed to getting pizza orders from the entire country (let alone internationally!)

Thank you for your understanding!

The kids get really excited when you throw down a $20. After all, these are college kids who have to work at a pizza joint to get by and they share in the Tip Pool.

This is all so cool that I'm thinking it will be worth all of the Hell I'll have to pay (on top of all the dollars).

I've been pretty glum lately, the more dots I connect - regarding Just How Much ground we've lost as liberals, progressives, Democrats, union workers, union sympathizers, women, the poor, any media voice that's not a limbaugh clone, and the list goes on. We've lost SO much ground. The whole country has been pushed to the so-called "right" and our side has done very little to anticipate or confront that trend, much less even recognize it. We need a DRASTIC uptick in regulations that actually have teeth (and yes, republi-CONS, the FUNDING to back it up), and COMPEL corporations to do the fair and reasonable thing with their employees. The Citizens United ruling has to be overturned and buried so deeply that it can never be unearthed again, no matter how much fucking money the koch brothers have to throw at it. What WOULD be resurrected would be a Teddy Roosevelt mentality of breaking up the monopolies - EVERYWHERE.

A democracy needs a level playing field to work the best, for the most. And I just haven't seen ANY meaningful thrust toward any of these things that need to be done to reverse a very sorry and dismal trend in America. So I've been pretty damn glum and cynical lately.

But this is downright UPLIFTING! Things like this actually revive my sense of hope - that's become seriously eroded in the last couple of decades.

ON WISCONSIN!!!!

Here's a section up on their website:

http://www.ianspizza.com

##Yes, we've seen tens of thousands of people vigorously exercising their right to freedom of speech, steps from our front door. We're not going to get too in-depth here (we are just pizza people, after all) but suffice it to say it's been a rather unusual mid-February downtown.

On Tuesday night/Wednesday morning we took a late-night call from folks still over at the Capital; they were wondering if they could have our end-of-night leftovers. Well, of course -- we're always glad to hand out food at 3:30am! (That is pretty much our reason for existence... well, that and the house-made ranch dressing.)

The next day we got a handful of calls from folks throughout the country, people who had heard about our late-night donation. Then a few more the next day, and next thing, fast forward to 5pm on Saturday when we were so inundated with calls - - from over half the states in the Union and from international locales ranging from Canada to Denmark -- that our normal business had to essentially be shut down so we could focus on feeding the protestors.#

It will make you feel good about your country!

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ians-Pizza-on-State/187063310047

Thoroughly enjoying all the comments, and the photo they posted of their blackboard - and ALL the countries phoning in pizza orders: Korean, Finland, New Zealand, Denmark, Australia, US, Canada, Germany, China, England, Netherlands, Turkey, Switzerland, Italy! And somebody posted that they were ordering for friends in Casablanca, Morocco. Others are asking how they can just donate to the place via Paypal, to do something for the employees at Ian's Pizza - who must be severely overwhelmed by now.

Some guy posted:
Hate to repost but I want you guys to think about it.
PAYPAL will let us throw money at you. I don't want to order a pizza, I want to give you money and let you do what you can with it. I hope that after everythings over, you come out big time with cash. I also want to give donations to your staff. Hourly is not enough when you are working your fingers to the bone. The people you are supporting know this all too well.

Also this post (presumably from Ian's):
Thanks to Governor Walker's Efforts, despite these down economic times, Ian's Pizza will soon be hiring!
Good job, Walker, for helping to eliminate unemployment!

REALLY gratifying to read through this page! If I weren't already on Facebook, this'd get me there for sure.

85. They are asking for orders to be place on line if possible
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ians-Pizza-on-State/18706...

94. How to order internationally?
Edited on Mon Feb-21-11 06:13 PM by Mokito
I wanted to place an online order to support the protesters, but it seems there is no means to pay internationally (Belgium). Even by Visa, a state and Zip code are required, which of course do not match with my account info and therefore are not accepted.

Any suggestions/ideas?

edit: added online

111. The pizza is definitely appreciated
I'm at the rally daily and can tell you that people appreciate all gestures of solidarity. Weather was a little nasty today so most of us let our voices be heard inside the rotunda of the Capitol building, drumming, chanting, sharing the mics for impromptu speeches. I talked today with supporters from San Fransisco, LA, Chicago, Connecticut, Seattle. It's understood that we are fighting not just for ourselves but for the future of labor and education throughout the country.

Being able to grab a free hot cup of coffee and a slice of pizza really keeps the engines stoked, but we are best fed by words of support from far and wide.
