Military 'don't ask, don't tell' repeal training under way
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) -- All four branches of the U.S. military have begun the required training necessary as part of the repeal of the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the armed forces, and expect to have it completed before the end of summer.

All four branches are following a three-step approach to the training as the military works toward removing itself from the "don't ask, don't tell policy." The first part focuses on training experts -- service members responsible for the administration of the new policy such as chaplains, lawyers and recruiters. The second step involves training senior leaders, including the highest-ranked officers and enlisted men and women in the services. Finally, the rank and file troops will be trained.

All uniformed military personnel and civilians in a position in which they supervise troops are required to undergo the training.

1. This is good news, as a trained force is a good force...
I thought they might just "jump into" this as some have suggested. But with the training program, they should have a much better success rate.

Being a vet, I know that mindsets in the military change slowly and grudgingly, it is a society with a society, and societal changes are always initially feared; that's why it takes time to get things done. It will take a little time to implement this, but as long as they are moving forward, I can't complain. I'd much rather and educated military than one that just gets new terms foisted upon them...nothing produces an angry GI faster than something that is forced upon him/her without an explanation or training in the new situation.

Unfortunately, the reality of the situation requires time, but, as I said above, forward movement is a good thing.

2. So, how long until Saturday Night Live does a sketch about this...
... and what are the odds that it will be handled appropriately?

I give it three months and a 50/50 chance.
