WikiLeaks among nominees for Nobel Peace Prize
Source: Reuters

Anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks has been nominated for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian politician behind the proposal said on Wednesday, a day after the deadline for nominations expired.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee accepts nominations for what many consider as the world's top accolade until February 1, although the five panel members have until the end of the month to make their own proposals.

Norwegian parliamentarian Snorre Valen said WikiLeaks was "one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency" in the 21st century.

"By disclosing information about corruption, human rights abuses and war crimes, WikiLeaks is a natural contender for the Nobel Peace Prize," Valen said.

Snorre Valen is in the Socialist Left party (who are democratic socialists) in the ruling red-green coalition.

33. Kissinger shared the 1973 Peace Prize with Le Duc Tho.
Edited on Wed Feb-02-11 03:05 PM by gauguin57
Should be in Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum.

Le Duc Tho, BTW, declined the prize, since, he said, there was no peace in Vietnam at the time.

Kissinger SHOULD have declined ... from SHAME.

42. When Kissinger won, musical satirist Tom Lehrer threw in the towel
When Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973, the distinguished musical satirist Tom Lehrer decided that he could no longer perform. "It was at that moment that satire died," says Lehrer, "There was nothing more to say after that."

14. The Peace Prizes are ALL political....
......it is the only prize given by 5 members of the Norwegian Parliament (Storting). The other prizes are given by literary and scientific organizations in SWEDEN. I won't be terribly surprised to see WL get this year's award.

35. Former members of parliament.
The reason Norway has this award while the rest is given out in Sweden by the way, is that when Alfred Nobel was alive Norway was a vassal state of Sweden with no foreign policy of its own. So the idea was that they would be completely independent of any current political events.

Obama's was more about putting pressure on him to deliver on his promises.

24. I'm anxious for the truth to come out whatever it is. There is no justice without truth.
After all wl's been put through, I hope they win the prize. The alleged participants have to be hiding something pretty embarrassing and pretty revealing to go to so much trouble to stop it from being known. Integrity? What's that? Something the majority of politicians running the world know nothing about. And care nothing about. Something the poor suckers they screw everyday have to teach them about some way some how. The wl plan seems like the best method lately.

U.S. prison population dwarfs that of other nations
By Adam Liptak
Published: Wednesday, April 23, 2008

The United States has less than 5 percent of the world's population. But it has almost a quarter of the world's prisoners.

...

The United States has, for instance, 2.3 million criminals behind bars, more than any other nation, according to data maintained by the International Center for Prison Studies at King's College London.

China, which is four times more populous than the United States, is a distant second, with 1.6 million people in prison.

San Marino, with a population of about 30,000, is at the end of the long list of 218 countries compiled by the center. It has a single prisoner.
