Fierce Fighting Sweeps Iraqi Cities, Shi'ite Areas

Wed Apr 7, 2004 11:24 AM ET

By Akram Saleh

---snip---

Since Sunday, clashes across Iraq have killed 33 U.S. troops, a Ukrainian soldier and a Salvadoran soldier.

---snip---

Ukrainian troops pulled out of Kut on Wednesday after clashes there in recent days and regrouped in their base camp, the defense ministry in Kiev said. It said the move was "on the request of U.S. representatives in the civil administration and with the objective to save soldiers' lives."

---snip---

Bulgaria summoned ambassadors of the United States, Britain, Spain and Poland to the foreign ministry on Wednesday asking for back-up for 450 Bulgarian soldiers stationed in Kerbala.

---snip, Meanwhile---

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari, in London for talks with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, said thousands more foreign troops might be needed to maintain order.

2. There will be no other choice.

Its very clear that our presence itself will be too disruptive for peace to finally take place. It's time for the US-led coaltion to step aside and let the UN and a coalition of middle east nations acting as a peacekeeping force in to calm the situation.

We lost...

,...which is the only rational option that offers any hope towards stability. The longer US forces and faces and companies remain in Iraq, the worse the scenario will become.

9. Who is going to man this UN force?
I don't hear the clamoring of nations eager to send troops into the hell the US made. Do you?

I agree that the US presence is too disruptive--not to say destructive--for peace to break out. Apart from apologizing and paying reparations, the US has no meaningful role left in Iraq.

But there's no magic bullet or guarantee that the nation can be put back together. Which Middle East nation would Iraqis trust to help them rebuild? Iran? Syria? And what framework for that happening is suggested by the 20th century, with its rich history of western efforts to subjugate the region?

5. how typical to expect other poorer nations to fight *'s "war" for
him. Carrots and sticks..corporate money has no doubt been promised to these poor bastards. Whether they actually get what was promised, we have yet to see.

Iraq is the model for hostile corporate takeover under the disguise of "war" - instead of a company it's now entire countries * and co. are after in order to line their already over-flowing coffers with yet more looted wealth from other nations. Corporatism is their God - to hell with our military or anyone else's for that matter - money is what matters.

7. Travel is so broadening
And none of us will ever forget these wonderful memories of blackened corpses, rubbled city blocks, and uranium-enriched smoke billowing in daring counterpoint to the molten late afternoon Babylonian sky. But now it's time now to leave! Thanks for the tour, and good luck with your new Disneyland!

12. Opposition in Ukraine and Bulgaria will benefit.
The public there does not and will not support aiding the occupation. I think the Bulgarian Socialists will win in the next elections. The communists are the main opposition in Ukraine, but perhaps a socialist can win with communist support.

14. Spain is scheduled to leave at the end of April.
Britain will run out of war funding at the end of June, and I believe 2 other european countries will, as well.

I really doubt that they are needed; I think it was more a symbolic gesture that BeelzeBush wanted. Even if it was 5 troops in each country, he could at least say that he enjoyed the "support" of these countries.

So if these countries pack up and go home, they will not make a huge impact. But the psychological thing would be more meaningful: they are leaving because they do not support it.

16. Well, C.O.W. was a weird conglomerate anyway ...

Did anybody notice that the Iraq action was followed by an infusion of troops from pardner Australia into pardner Solomon Islands?

:wtf: was that about? Here's a recent link:

Troops honoured for Solomons work
MORE than 560 Townsville troops were honoured yesterday for their efforts in bringing peace and order to the troubled Solomon Islands. In the first formal recognition of military service in the Solomon Islands, Defence Minister Robert Hill headed the official Operation Anode Formal Parade at Lavarack Barracks yesterday. During the parade Senator Hill handed out the Australian Service Medal to Townsville's 561 defence personnel who had served in the Solomon Islands. Townsville sent the first deployment of troops to the troubled island state in July last year, with the most recent return of soldiers -- the second rotation of 2RAR troops -- arriving home to a rapturous welcome just last weekend.
