Two packages explode in Maryland state office buildings; no injuries reported

A federal official says two packages exploded Thursday at state government buildings in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, according to NBC News.

Both were apparently sent through the mail, an official says. In both cases, the packages emitted a small bang or flame. The official says so far it appears no one was hurt in either incident. But ABC2News.com reported that several people had been injured.

10. Explosive packages cause injuries at two Maryland state buildings; one addressed to O'Malley
Source: Baltimore Sun

Gov. Martin O'Malley said today that one of the explosive packages sent to state buildings today was addressed to him. The packages — one near the State House in Annapolis and another in Hanover — injured at least one person, officials said.

The state government locked down all its mailrooms after the incidents, according to a bulletin from the Maryland Department of Transportation.

A State House mailroom employee was hurt while handling a package, and the incident was being investigated by bomb squad officials, according to Annapolis city officials. The Department of Transportation said there were two explosives there.

Another explosive device detonated at the Department of Transportation's headquarters, at 7201 Corporate Center Drive in Hanover, according to the agency.

13. Explosive packages
Sounds like firecrackers, or something equally non threatening.

Good for scaring people into accepting the security-industrial complex.

14. The news is still unclear
The packages were small - described as the size of a book. They "detonated" in state office building mail rooms. I put detonated in quotes because they are reported more to have fizzled and smoked than actually shown any explosive action. One flamed for just a few seconds and injured slightly the man who was opening it. He refused treatment.

The packages had holiday stamps on them.

The return addresses were a parking garage in DC, meaning they were essentially a dead end.

Right now, the worst impact is traffic being held up throughout the region as one building is in Annapolis, one in Hanover, between BWI Airport and BWI Rail Station, and one in Baltimore, just north of downtown. The latest word is that a fourth incident may have occurred at a state courthouse in the heart of downtown, but that is unconfirmed.

15. Now they're saying there may be a fourth package at the state health dept offices, also in downtown.
Police confirming they're looking into something, but still won't confirm a similar incident.

2 packages ignite in Md. gov't buildings; 2 hurt

HANOVER, Md. – Two packages about the size of small books ignited and released a sulphur-like smell when they were opened Thursday at Maryland state government buildings 20 miles apart, slightly burning the fingers of two employees. One of the parcels was addressed to Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley.

The fiery devices, one found in Hanover, another in Annapolis, caused the evacuation of mailrooms at government offices across Maryland. Two other suspicious packages were discovered in the distress, though one was found to be a toner cartridge; the other laptop batteries.
