Greece: Fence Is Considered to Bar Illegal Immigrants
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: January 3, 2011

Greece is considering building a fence along a section of its border with Turkey that is the busiest transit point for illegal immigration in Europe, the minister of citizen protection said Monday. “Greek society has exceeded its limit in its capacity to accommodate illegal immigrants,” the minister, Christos Papoutsis, said in an interview posted on his Web site. “Greece can no longer tolerate this.” He said Greece also planned to upgrade its coast guard. In a separate statement, he said 128,000 immigrants had entered Greece illegally in 2010. Ministry officials said a final decision on the fence had not been made.

2. Fat lot of good a fence would do
We've got the English Channel, c. 21 miles wide at its narrowest, and even that don't work.

4. Building a fence seems to provide a psychological benefit for some people, even if
it provides little in terms of practical benefit. :) The Berlin Wall (to keep East German citizens from emigrating to the West) and the Maginot Line (to keep Germany from invading France along that portion of their border) both accomplished their goals in the short run, but the countries that built them collapsed anyway.

You will depress the "fence-builders" if you continue to point out that a 21-mile wide "moat" doesn't even make for a good fence. ;)
